PISS! I shoulda checked the latest RSS feed headlines in my blog when posting this. Oh well, Call me Nostradamus. :x :x :x

Wednesday, March 24 2010 HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA -- The Keystone State's Democratic leaders say a controversial new tax could put $40,000.00 to work.

Pennsylvania is the only state in the union without a tax on smokeless tobacco products, and some lawmakers say now is the time to jump on the bandwagon. Senate Democrats are pushing the tax, saying the revenue could be put toward job creation initiatives.

According to supporters, the revenue would create temporary jobs in the service and non-profit fields and supply thousands of residents with paychecks over the next 2 years.

government funded health care is good and bad......bad because they are most likely going to tax your tobacco out the a** like the canadian government does to us to get people to stop so the health care wouldnt cost em so much for tobacco related illnesses...good because well..self explanitory

Hi Psilocybin, my first post here goes to a fellow Canuck! The excise tax is supposed to be $57.85 per kg for "manufactured tobacco", plus federal and provincial tax, plus a five dollar handling fee. I got a shipment from Northerner in two parts: the snus from the States was just handed to me, no signature, no money. The five tins of dry snuff, maybe eighty grams, sent from Sweden, was...hold on to your hat....fifty-two flippin' dollars!

You can refuse it at the door, but don't count on a refund: most places will specify you order at your own risk and are entirely responsible for duty, etc. No returns. I can report that it's pretty rare I get whacked like that. Maybe twice a year? I will be submitting a request for a refund; it's not hard, check a few boxes, include the receipt, and there you go.

DO NOT ever order from outside of Canada using UPS or any courier company. Ever. They will charge not only all duty and taxes, but they also charge a brokerage fee of around fifty dollars! Guess how I found that out? Sigh.

I've been snusing for a week now: you'll never want your Grizzly again once you've had the real stuff, trust me.

Further to what Alcyon said here is the link to the area of the CBSA site that talks about disputing the charges and the form that is to be used to file for an adjustment (form B2G).

I haven't had to personally go this route (yet) for tobacco. But I did file one once for a soccer jersey that I ordered from England. It is an easy process as Alcyon says.

On top of all you mentioned there is also an actual duty charge of 5% of the value of the goods.

Thank you for that! I tried looking for something like this a while ago but the process/paperwork I came across was much more involved than that. I'm pretty sure my shipments are being assessed by total weight under the wrong category, so I'm gonna give this a try and let you guys know how it goes.
