A Noob's "The Mix" Experience: Teachable Moment?

    Howdy everybody! Snus noob here.

I think I'm a pretty typical new U.S. snuser. Wanted to quit smoking. Never liked dipping . . . but hey, what's this Camel stuff? Hmmm, cloyingly sweet, but interesting. Googled "snus" and found myself whistling "A Whole New World" from Aladdin.

Before doing any serious reading up on the subject, I decided to order a roll of "The Mix - portion" from buysnus.com. The rationale being that since I have no idea what I'm gonna like, I may as well let somebody else choose a variety of different stuff for me to try out. I'd then be able to make more educated decisions going forward.

Well, during the first few days after making that order, I spent a lot of time reading through this forum, paying particular attention to people's opinions on different brands of snus. And without any conscious effort, a list started forming in my head of different snuses that I definitely wanted to try. Along with that list came another one: snuses I was not interested in trying any time soon.

That's when I started to realize that I'd probably goofed in ordering the mystery mix. So I placed a small order with getsnus.com to make sure I'd end up with at least some stuff that I actually wanted. I'm really glad I did.

    This is my buysnus.com "Mix":

Two cans, Oden's Original. Two cans, Oden's Kanel. Three cans, Thunder Frosted. Three cans, Thunder Original. And my bonus can, Thunder Wintergreen.

I wouldn't have chosen any of these, based on what I've been reading in this forum (although I have to admit to some slight curiosity about the Kanel.) I'm not interested in Thunder at all. More importantly, every single can in this "mix" is an Extra Stark, and I'd rather not get dependent on that high a dose of nicotine.

It probably sounds like I'm bitching. It should, because I am. But I don't really mean to rag on buysnus.com. They totally fulfilled their part of the deal. This was my fault. I jumped the gun. Shoulda known better.

And that's the point of this post. To the other snusnoobs out there: If you're contemplating your first snus order, and you're overwhelmed with the choices, and you have no idea what to try first . . . just keep reading this forum. There's a wealth of info here, and I guarantee it won't be long before you have a tidy little list of "must try's" that will be far more satisfying than a "mystery roll".

On the other hand, I may very well just be a big unadventurous sissy.

Anyway, my more deliberate getsnus order happily arrive at the same time as the buysnus one, so all is well. I will get through the "Mix" eventually. I'll just try to space them out in an attempt to not get hooked on the nico-bombs.

Sorry for this long-ass rant. And again, I'm not blaming anything on buysnus.com (well, maaaaaaybe there could have been just a bit more variety? )

    Cheers!!

No disrespect to Buysnus either because they are a company that I regularly order from, but personally I'd be annoyed if I had ordered a "mix" and gotten nothing but V2 products (We all know Oden's is made by V2), and all Starks to boot.

Where is the Swedish Match, the Skruf, the F&L products? Thunder is not even a true budget snus so they could have given you Granit, Knox, Retro, and a few SM products for roughly the same cost IMO.

Personally, I don't recommend the "mixes" and I think you are right that first time snusers should use the recommendations of other forum members as a starting point.

Let us know what you ordered from Getsnus and your impressions of the various snus once you've sampled a few.

I think that should be called the 'V2 Mix' rather than 'The Mix' I would have been bummed with that as I don't go for the V2 stuff.

My 1st order was the White Sampler from Get snus. I think... anyway, that was good sampler.

I have a few Starks in my stash, but I haven't gotten to use them yet, I still have a bunch of cans I am working on. I did try 1 Claq Qui, but really, I didn't notice any big nic hit.

I do like the Odens Classics.
I'm not a "frosted" fan, but I do have some of their minis.

My advice to noobs, being rather new myself, is use getsnus, and pick 5 cans of non stark of a variety of types and brands that look interesting to you. You also get a free can, which basically makes it like free shipping. Don't be afraid to try a loose too, but get a prismaster too.

That's indeed the weirdest "mix" that I've ever seen.

Everyone has different tastes in the end and you never know what brands you gonna like, but there are so many informations around about single brands. Even the short and sometimes cryptic descriptions of the webshops give enough informations for everyone to make a personal order that should be better than every mix.

I always thought that the mix-offers are only for people who don't bother to read any discussions on boards like this one and for people who don't have the slightest idea about which flavors mights appeal to them, and last but not least people who don't mind to possibly trash every second can in case the taste is unbearable.

But that's just my 2 cents. I've been pretty lucky as a newbie with following other people's recommendations regarding my orders, mostly from other snus-boards (this board was pretty young and maybe had one or two postings per day, when I started to use snus). I must say though that I studied everything I could find about snus in general and about different brands for 14 days, before I made my first order. It's understandable that not everyone is as patient (or, which fits better in my case: hesitant).

          Cheers!

Yup. A bit more patience would've served me well. Live and learn.

I've only had a couple of portions from the Mix so far. Tried the Kanel first and actually liked it a lot. Started thinking I might have to take back everything I said!! But then next was the Thunder Frosted. Ugh. Gonna need therapy to get through all those.

As far as the stuff I chose from Getsnus . . . at this point the similarities are standing out to me more than the differences. But I really enjoy the weirdness of Gote Rape #2. Ettan has a nice mellow thing going on. Skruf and Claq Qui (my strongest choice) were pleasant, but neither made a very distinct impression on my inexperienced palate. Haven't tried the Grov or General White yet. It's gonna take a while to get to know these little guys.

I like Odens. I have an Odens Classic regular portion in right now. I also like the Kanel, and the kanel Los. Those are good, I think. I haven't tried the Extra Stark, but they are popular from what I read. Not a big Frosted or even a Wintergreen fan, but I have some(Gen WG), I haven't tried the regular Thunder portions, but they do get good reviews.

This is nice little review site:

My guess this was a mistake. Buysnus does have a Thunder Sample Pack with T-shirt] that is much larger than you got. Something went wrong with this order and I would contact Buysnus about it.

BTW, Thunder's PH is such that it doesn't hit hard. Just don't chain snus it as the nicotine sticks around in you longer than most. But the way it releases, I doubt it would get you used to "higer" nicotine levels. Skruff stark, for example, although lower in nicotine, releases it all almost immidiately

I'm going to buck the trend here, and throw in, in favor of mix packs. My first Swedish snus was from Northerner, and it was a 24 tin mix box. I don't think they sell that anymore which is a shame. Everybody's tastes are different, and your individual tastes may not be what you think they are with regard to snus; I've certainly had some surprises in both directions along the way. Mixes force you try some brands cause that's the way they come :^D

I agree that your "mix" sucks, and I think Sage is on the right track with his thinking. Send Buysnus an email, and see what they have to say. I've found them very accommodating in the past, and their CS fantastic.

I still say Northerner's Top 10 box is the best of the best. Maybe 2 out of the 10 I don't think most will like, but the rest are fantastic, and the price just can't be beat.

This is what you get with Northerner's Top 10 box....

                    Lucky Strike Original Portion
                    Nick (and Johnny) Original Portion
                    Röda Lacket White Portion
                    Grovsnus Portion
                    Göteborgs Rapé White Portion
                    Catch Eucalyptus White Portion
                    Wise Citrus/Menthol 6mg
                    Ettan Portion
                    Skruf Stark Portion
                    General Portion

The only two that many (not all) won't like is Catch Eucalyptus & Wise Citrus/Menthol

The snus is good, but all those have cardboard tasting portion material. I would be disappointed in that order too...

Good point - BuySnus has excellent CS. Defo worth dropping them an e-mail.

Now that is officially the most effed-up mix I've ever seen from Buysnus. :? To be honest, I like just about everything you have there, but that is not an accurate representation of their products.....especially for a first-time buyer. My first order from them was also the mix, and it was probably the most varied and balanced selection I've seen.

I agree that there may have been some kind of mix-up when they sent it out. For future reference, there is also a comment box where you can ask them not to include certain brands before you order.

                            Thanks for the responses, everybody!

You're probably right that something just went a little wonky with my Mix order. But the Mix that I got, even if it was substandard as far as the variety they might normally send out, really did come just as advertised (no more than three cans of the same type, etc.) And the truth is I kinda knew I'd made a mistake even before receiving the package.

So I'm just gonna live with my goof and let it go.

Or . . . anybody think there's a market for Thunder in the Snus Exchange?

                            P.S. -- General White rocks!

I'd be interested in the Thunder Originals, as I haven't tried them, and Odens Originals, I like, but I haven't tried the Extra Stark. I'd think someone would like the Frosted, everything I read seems positive, and the wintergreen too. I also like the Kanel, I have portion and los. If you have stuff you don't want, sure, post it, try and give some idea of stuff you would rather have, I might have something.
