freshness of snus and tainted weak skruf batch?

ok, so im a fairly new tobacco user, and completely new to snus. ive been chewing american dip for around a year now. i got my first order from buysnus about four days ago.

i really like not having to spit and the taste of it, compared to american chew. my main concern, is that i have a mild paranoia that the skruf i got might be weak or tainted for some reason. first of all, i read lots of reports online that skruf cranberry is supposed te be a very wet portion, yet when i got mine they were almost completely dry. also some said that it has a very strong taste of cranberry and even bannana. yet mine was very bitter with minimal cranberry taste and more of a tartness to it.

yet the real kicker is when i tried the skruf xtra portions. each time i tried them, i got nearly no buzz. maybe a mild initial buzz then it wore off. when i compared the buzz to my other extra strength snus, (thunder extra frosted, odens extra Cinnamon), for those snus i would occasionally have to take them out after 15-30 minutes and sit down due to the high nicotine content. and if i did my research right skruf's extra is supposed to be even higher in nicotine content then those two brands of extra strength...

another sneaking suspicion of mine is that my snus might be drying out early for some reason. the first few snus's of my odens knocked me on my rear so-to speak, lol. but the last few i had gave me a decent buzz, yet not as strong as the first few out of the can.

most of my snus i got have an experation date of at least december '10 if not a few months beyond that. i read that opened snus keep fresh for about a max of a week. but ive been keeping the snus cans i dont use, closed up an in my fridge. so i wonder what to make of all this??

Skruf has been having quality control issues for a while now with the result that most of their portions are either dry or completely flavourless. I'll let our resident Skruf Stark expert and moderator pris add his comments on the decline of Skruf.....

I would say you built up a tolerance.

Skruf Tranbar has a mild taste and mild nicotine. You're basing your expectations on other people's reviews. If you recently started snus it will all taste mild compared to dip or chew.

As far as the first few portions hitting you harder, I'd say you're chasing the dragon. Tolerance is a bitch. Go longer between snus. Your joy ride only hits when you haven't had some in a while.

Snus ordered in the summer, in my opinion, is not so fresh. It rode a long way in some dark and hot package for several days before sitting in your hot ass mailbox for who knows how many hours before you put some in your mouth...

well, i'd say i built up a decent-sized tolerance but not an amazing amount of it. as for your hot package and mail-box theory, i ordered my snus on tuesday morning and it arrived on my door step thursday afternoon, a signature was required, so no hot mailboxes were involved...

also, in my state the highs have fluctuated from 50's to low 70's. so most of the high heat and humidity has gone away. i guess my next course of action is to steer clear of any skruf on my next order? i understand building up a tolerance, but not getting even a decent buzz from a portion of what is supposedly the "strongest tobacco in the world" really leads me to believe that i wasted money on a dried out batch of tobacco. oh well, still enjoying my odens and thunder frosted and the other brands i bought...

Maybe you did flush some money down the toilet. I, for one, as well as others, have noted Skruf tasting different since it was purchased by "Big Tobacco." When it was a small boutique brand it was very consistent, and delicious.

Now it's just another brand in someone's portfolio. A shame really. I remember when the loose made me salivate. Now, it's just another snus on the shelf. It went from a great treat to ho-hum.

well, i'm new to the snus scene so i wouldn't know much about corporate changes and takeovers in the snus business. all i can say is i am planning to steer clear of the skruf brand from now on unless i hear otherwise. also, how long should my opened cans of snus stay fresh when closed and kept in my fridge?

I don't really ever even use Skruf anymore, for the same reasons. It really did used to be an awesome product, but the last few cans I got were complete flavorless crap. Reminded me of Offroad, which is the worst snus ever created, IMHO.

Your open cans should stay fresh for at least A couple weeks to a month sometimes even longer depending on how you store them in the fridge.... Keep your open cans at least in a Freezer bag in the coldest part of your fridge and don't keep taking a full can with you all day then back again in the fridge... only take what your going to use for the day with you... I use freshvac Vacuum containers in the fridge and my snus is as fresh as the day i opened it.... That was a month ago, i swear these containers are even adding moisture... Do a search for Freezing Snus and Storage for other helpful tips You can even refreshen your snus with some purified water by a light one spray mist and let sit for a day closed in fridge... Do a search for How to Keep Portions Hydrated for ideas... There is a sticky in snus tips and tricks the thread is called *FAQ* General Snus Tips... btw... The max of about a week of freshness you read was out of the fridge.... Best tip I learned.... Take a deap breath and relax snus is tobacco and it is not that fagile... Now i just need to follow that tip

Every can of Skruf Stark los I've received in the past year has been dry and crumbly compared to 2 years ago and with every can it seems as if the flavor is fading even more. Before I even use a brand new can, I add water and let the snus chill in the fridge for a couple days. I thought it was just me, but now it doesn't seem to be. Sorry, can't comment on the portions as Skruf is on the bottom of that list for me, I've never been a fan.

I went buck wild on skruf and stocked up heavily before PACT and now I'm experiencing a bit of the same. Shitty dried up and stuck together portions I have to damn near separate with a knife. I still like the skruf 'rose oil' flavor though, when I can taste it.

                          -

Some of mine are stuck together. I started snus in April so I only know what
                          Skruf I got since then.

I like all the varieties. I have a Tranbar in right now and I'm getting
                          a decent nic fix.

I had to put in a favorable plug.

Sometimes I think living in Sweden would be worth it. Imagine walking to the gas station and knowing your snus was fresh and shipped in a refrigerated truck. I know the prices are higher, but I would probably pay the extra dollar or two per can for the assurance.

When it comes to Skruf, most of the portions are pretty dry (including Original and Tranbar). The Xtra Stark has a very high moisture content, so if they seem dry you should contact the online store you purchased them from.
