I never thought this would happen

I went for a pris of Taboca Loose yesterday, and much to my surprise:

Those white blotches are fungal mycelia, i.e. clumps of mold.

It *is* kind of an old can--b.f. 18 11 09. Heh. I thought it had been in the freezer for most of its life, and I remember it being unusually moist--like almost too moist to even use. But maybe this is a different can, that got lost for a while. Anyway, I never expected to see *mold* on snus, ever. Maybe I can do a better picture if anyone's interested. It was like, eww.

Weird. I've only gotten moldy tobacco once. That was with Drum RYO, when it first came back to America under Republic distribution. It had white fuzz all over it. That couldn't have been frozen the whole time, right? How would mold grow?

Right, it's been unfrozen for a while. I just can't remember if this was the really juicy can, but I think it was. It's the white fuzz just as you describe. I'm curious to see if the next can of this I take down from the freezer is going to be that super-wet. You can be sure I will use the next one up more quickly. At least they're only 35g, so there is that.

I've had pipe tobacco go moldy on me when it wasn't stored properly but never snus.

May be you should let it develop................you could have the first ever shroom snus

I bet it has a lot to do with those shoddy metal tins Toboca uses. Awesome look, but they are far from air-tight.

Yeah, I wouldn't use is either. Of all the los to be lost, Taboca is one of the saddest losses. I love it. I just ordered a half roll of it too and judging by your date mine will live in the freezer that long too...oh no.

I've got a medium tin of Santo Domingo snuff that has mold on it. Haven't gotten around to taking a picture and posting is yet. It's terrible.

Well, you're good, I'm sure. Like bander and the poobah point out, those metal tins are more for show. But the new ones will have that adhesive plastic strip on them. A new tin of Taboca in the freezer should be just fine. My guess is once the strip is removed, the clock is ticking.

And I don't think I really need to add this, but just so everyone knows, I wasn't thinking about using this snus anyway ;^)

I have one can of taboca but it is the portions and it's not really a snus I enjoy too much. However, I keep ALL my snus in the freezer, so hopefully nothing like this happens.

The worst/maybe the coolest thing I've noticed from storing snus in the freezer is sometimes you can see the crystals of salt or whatever else on the snus.

Oh, where's your sense of adventure?

At least you noticed it. Could have been worse--you could have put a pris in your mouth in the dark!
