    Newbie goes loose. my experience

So my tryout box of swedish match loose arrived. I did indeed luck out and get a can of N&J. I had previously said I'd give it away, but curiosity got the better of me, and I couldn't be more sad. It's definitely my favorite. Another poster mentioned how it continues to feel cold in your lip, and it does.

    Initial Observations:

    1) A hell of a lot less salt than portions.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not getting floored by salt. That was my biggest issue when I first switched from camel to swedish. Now, the reason I'm assuming for this relates directly to....

    2) You do not screw with the snus once it's in.

At least, I'm not. I'm scared to death it's going to liquify. I just leave it in place in my upper lip, and it lasts forever. I'm doing full tilt tongue tip twirls and backflips with portions. I can't ever seem to keep them in one place long before I have to move em around.

    3) What the hell is this with portions being easier on the gums?

My only assumption is that they are considering that in some cases, the tiny pieces of tobacco get lodged between your teeth and gums and cause serious issues. The way I'm placing and using a pris, I don't see this ever happening. I find loose an order of magnitude more comfortable in my lip than portions.

    4) Out of all 8 brands in the loose sample pack, I loved them all.

I really wish I had tried loose first. The experience is completely different from portions. Instead of this mildly abrasive tea bag in my lip, I have some cold loose tobacco clay. it's soothing. I'm developing an early preference for N&J and Ettan, but we are talking about a very slight difference in my overall preference for any of them. I love the greenish taste of the kronan as much as the pure tobacco taste of the roda. I love the smoky taste of the ettan as much as the fruity taste of the gote. So far, I'd order a roll of any of them. I can't wait for the rest of the loose I ordered from northerner to get here. I really hope the skruf stark tastes like the N&J.

    5) Pris making is a heck of a lot easier than I thought it would be.

I'm a fairly dexterous guy. I've played guitar and piano for over 20 years. I type 90 wpm. Maybe that's something to do with it. And I do believe I could mold an entire miniature zoo out of a few cans of rota or prima. For cleanliness,

I'm preferring to use the prismaster I modified. Based on the memory of a post I read by someone else, I turned the plunger around, and cut a bunch off the end. It's small, light, and works perfectly for how I use it. I get just the right size of pris to force up into my upper lip in both left and right sides. The little separator flap of skin dents the pris in the middle, and it's practically invisible to others. A little tap on my upper lip to smash it a little flat, and it's not near where my gums and teeth meet. The oval shape is perfect. For this reason, I don't see myself ordering an icetool. If anything, I'll order a few more prismasters, and put them away in case I lose one.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to chance using loose on the job. I'll wait until I'm comfortable with it, and sure I'm not going to have a brown toothy mud rain happen. The difference in comfort for me between portions and loose is night and day. I'm going to try the probe loose now, even though I thought the portions were disgusting.

Keep in mind that even if you're good at handling loose on your own at home or whatnot, it's still quite a different affair out and about, talking a lot and so on. At home with it in, I'm sitting down and I just don't move my mouth much, except for some adjusting and having a drink. But when I'm elsewhere, it just gets moved all about and i can't handle it easily...
even if i'm not moving my mouth or talking or anything, acting exactly the same as if i were at home, it just automagically starts getting liquified and slimed upon my teeth..no rhyme or reason, it just does, of course, it would be too easy otherwise.

Loose is the path of the enlightened There is nothing like a large pris of ettan in the morning. I sometimes use it when I'm out and about with friends but when I have to meet stranges or have a meeting with my advisor I use portions, As RealmofOpeth said, using loose opens up more opportunities for social awkwardness. Especially when talking and no chance of disposing of the pris.

Also If someone see's the pris or you have to turn down food because your snusing you have to go through the whole explanation of snus for the 100 time. It get annoying after a while!

I have mixed feelings about lös. There's a couple so far that I really like(Landströms, Gellivare, Probe), but I have a hard time getting flavor out of some others. I agree about the mouth feel, it's easier on the gums, but I enjoy playing with the portions. It gives me something to do, and they hardly ever run, !@#$ broken pouches :^P

I think that by far my favorite lös is Diplomat. It's hard to hand-bake a tight pris, but that's what my icetool's for. I tried the portions (white and original) of Diplomat but didn't get the same flavor from those that I do from the lös.

Same goes for N&J -- unfortunately, in light of the recent announcement from BuySnus, I may be stuck with the portions. I did just read a post in another thread that N&J is still being produced in lös form, just not sold in Sweden. I don't know how this will affect its being sold on BuySnus and Northerner.

The point being, there are some brands that come in both varieties (lös and portion) that are just plain better loose.

I agree. I generally prefer the loose versions of brands. Some portions are great, but the flavor with loose is a lot more subtle and natural tasting. Ettan for instance. The original portions are okay, but nothing compared to the loose. I've never tried the Nick and Johnny portions, but the loose is magical. I'm sad to see it go. I never even had the desire to try the portions. I just tried the loose and stuck with it.

However, I still use portions when out and about. It's just easier. Goteborgs Rape white is my day to day brand most of the time. The loose is better, but the portions are pretty damn good too.
