    Finally quit smoking this is my regime need advice

    I finally quit smoking, today is day 8.. I have been using snus. I am still confused about the nicotine intake.

    Right now I am using the 02 portion, which is 13 mg of nicotine. Seems a bit high. What i have been doing is, I put in a portion, keep it in for maybe 20 mins, spit it out, than wait about an hour before I put in another portion. I know the nicotine stays in your blood longer with snus than smoking.


    What I am curious about is, How do you determine how much nicotine you are getting? Some people seem to have it figured out. For example 20 mins of 13mg snus portion is how many mg's absorbed. Or how many cigarettes? I have no idea if i am getting too much or not enough nicotine.

    my advice (and im sure youre going to hear something along these lines in more replies) is thus:
    use as much snus as often as you feel the need. keep them in for as long as you need. if you feel the need to smoke a ciggy, smoke one. eventually the desire to smoke will go away.

      I just go by the way the body feels, but I'm very close to being a chain snuser anyways...too afraid of slipping. :wink:

      I'm at day 300 today, sweet! So just keep at it...tons of us in here are success stories with using snus to quit smoking.

        They found that the nicotine uptake from Swedish snus was initially quite fast, since the nicotine concentration in the blood increased by ca 10 ng/ml during the first 10 minutes. After that, the uptake rate was somewhat slower and the plasma concentration reached a maximal level after the pinch had been taken out. After the fast increase in blood nicotine concentration during smoking, the nicotine is eliminated quite rapidly after having finished the cigarette.         Personally, I keep in each portion/prilla of snus in for approximately 60 minutes. I have read that nearly all the available nicotine is extracted in one hour. This study just shows when blood nicotine levels reach the maximum point.

          that is a little bit of a play on words there. Of course you are going to keep getting nicotine with it in your mouth, but when u spit it out, i wonder how much longer it takes your body to get rid of the nicotine.

          My goal is to reduce the nicotine levels so im not really crazy dependent on it. I know the attitude here is snus is safe ill do it forever. Screw quitting nicotine etc. but i dont want to use this for 30 years. I am sure this snus stuff is not that great for you after decades.

            I'm sure there are a medley of variables in play here so everyone's a little different.

            From what I can remember about smoking I think the nic I get from an 8mg snus that I keep in for about an hour or so equals the same I think I'd get from maybe two cigarettes (1.5?)...or at least that's about the effect anyhow. I can't speak for sure about the mg/kg of nic but that's about the time I'd think about having another cig or now another snus.

              One cig contains roughly 10 mg of nic, but you only absorb about 1 mg. How much you actually absorb depends on a lot of things like how deeply you inhale, how long you hold in the smoke, how much of the cigarette you actually smoke...etc. Most of the nicotine in a cigarette is vaporized upon combustion.

              Similar variables are at play for snus portions. If a typical portion has 8 mg nic, you will probably absorb anywhere from 1 to 4 mg. This depends on things like how long you leave it in, how much you chew or "squeeze" it, how wet it is, etc. You may be getting at least twice as much nicotine from a portion than from a cig, but it may not feel that way, since you are absorbing it from your mouth instead of from your lungs.
              There is no way to be certain about how much nic you are getting, and no one else can tell you how much to use. Listen to your body and you will know if you are getting too much or too little.

                the nicotine in snus maybe a lot higher than a cigarette. cigarettes though directly inject nicotine into your bloodstream making em very efficient. snus on the other hand is a very inefficient way to absorb the nicotine. swedish match says with a gram of snus at 10mg only 2-3 mg of snus gets absorbed into your bloodstream through your lip. so i wouldnt worry about how much you're really taking in ya know. its about what a cigarette is worth.

                    I don't know nor do I care about exactly how much and at what rate nicotine is absorbed with snus, but it's good to remember that snus provides more options as to how you get your vitamin N. For example if you're at the bar tying one on with your buddies they might want to go outside (or stay put in some states) and light up 2-3 times in one hour while you can keep one 8mg snus in for low and steady nic fix. If you are really having a good time and feel like you need more, you could chain-snus two ES portions during that hour and get a lot more but still at a steady rate.

                    Cigs deliver the same amount (unless the smoker is like us and carries several different strengths lol) at the same smack-in-the-face-then-run-away rate, so all I'm trying to say is that you can have it your way with snus and use it however you see fit for the moment, it's easier to control as sage often likes to pont out. More toward the point of your question, if you're trying to eventually quit I would suggest just going as long as you can until you feel uncomfortable between sneese and see if you can prolong the wait more and more over time. Personally I'm anywhere from keeping snus in for 10 minutes and waitting 2+ hours to chain-snusing sterks very 30 minutes depending on what my body's asking for at the moment.

                      congrats on quitting. I'm on day 30 myself. The way I've been looking at it is that....I'm not smoking for the first time in 18 years and that's a start. Yes, I'm still recieving nicotine, but in not as harmful a manor.

                      Snus has allowed me to get away from the "action" of smoking and yet allowed me to keep my addiciton to nicotine in place. Do I want to be hooked on Vitamin N, no, but I'm taking it 1 battle at a time. One of the benefits of snus, is that it available in different strengths, allowing me to use Sterks during a strong craving and regulars/ minis when I know I'm just fullfilling an absurd oral fixation.

                      Use as strong of a snus as you need to stop from lighting up for now. Later, start ordering minis or mix in a few of the nicotine free blends to mix in. You know the drill. Anyway, congrats on resisting the urge to smoke.
                      I took a drag off a cigarette yesterday and then reached straight into my pocket for a portion....I don't understand how I put up with that flavor for 18 freaking years.

                        Man I wish I had that reaction. I bummed an unfiltered camel today and it tasted amazing. I may just have to allow myself a cig once a week...when I could truly enjoy it.

                              ive actually wanted to comment on this for a while. its not something i encounter as much now, but often in my earlier snus days, i had trouble differentiating the withdrawal symptoms from the overdose symptoms. theyre practically the same, really. you feel like shit when you havent had enough, you feel like pretty much the same shit when you have one when you didnt really need one. i have no advice for it really. just an interesting thought that used to plague me.
