Having a hard time with los texture

I've been dipping a long time, Copenhagen Long Cut if you haven't read my other thread...

So I figured I would be more interested in the Los rather than packets...

But I'm having a hard time dealing with the silky texture of Los snus, and find myself leaning more towards portions...

Is it just the snus I've been using, Oden's and Gote Rape...

Even standard Copenhagen doesn't have that, and the only term I can think of to explain it is silky...are there versions of snus that have larger bits o snus or am I going to end up using portions primarily?

Offroad makes two longcuts. Original and wintergreen. Won't taste like cope. Is a much coarser cut than what you've tried so far.

A couple of points. You need to try a broader variety of lös. The cuts of different brands are different, so maybe you will find one you prefer more.

But just because you dipped, doesn't mean you won't end up preferring portions better. Snus is different than American And the Swedish snus portions are WAY better than any of that American portion crap they sell. Perhaps if American portions were as good as Swedish portions, you would have used portions all along??

      But....

Keep trying new things, most important job for the new Swedish snus user. Everything is different, and everyone's tastes are different. So try everything. And in the end, just use what you like with no apologies.

          I'll have to keep trying...

Thankfully I have some Phantom Blue AND Offroad Longcut in American Wintergreen so I'll try those next...

What I have tried and liked:

Discreet Peach and Emerald Ice...great little pick me uppers...
Thunder Original and Frosted Portions...especially the Frosted.

          Ones that were OK:
Granit Maxi, I think these are really just too large for my upper lip, and too small to bottom lip it, I've made quite a pocket from Cope LC...*laugh*
General Onyx - seems to have a licorice flavor to it...I've got two cans so I'm going to finish this oen and wait a month or two on the other.

On the lose, as I said in my previous post I'm having issue with the texture...I'll finish out the cans and then kick on the Phantom Blue and Offroad Long Cut and see what gives...

I can say, Pris Master is my friend with Los...keeps my fingers clean...and I really like that. Sure I can free form it or even just pinch and form it with my tongue...but this little tool is just too sweet. I may have to invest some extra cash in an Ice Tool if I can find a Los I enjoy...

I'd throw in a vote for Skruf Stark. When you first open the can, the lös looks pretty coarse, but it smooths out nicely when you go to bake it, and holds together well. A lot of people recommend Röda Lacket for new lösers, but while it bakes nice, you might not notice any flavour to it for a long time.

Guess that's why there is such a variety. Don't get me wrong, I love the taste of Odens ES, and I have a can o' portions as well. I'll be trying those out very soon to see if they kept the flavor alive with it.

Thanks to y'all...I'll let ya know how the blue and longcut work out

                    Rowdymon,

First, let me say- a big welcome to the forum. And thanks for your post.

Having come to snus via dip I can sympathies with your dilemma. Snus is by far much finer in cut than dip. That said, all snus is not the same. Some are finer than others. Also I find that the textures of various brands differ significantly. Now while I really like the cut of the Phantoms and the Odens all the V2 products have a wax like texture and feel to them. This may be some of what you are referring to.

Rather than going from one V2 to another (e.g. Oden to Phantom) might I recommend you try knox, Grov, Gotlands, Kronan and Skruf. At the same time, avoid (for now) Roda, General, Granit, Prima Fint. You will want to try these eventually but for now I think it is important just to get you acclimated to snus.

And this is important. For so many (especially x-smokers) the acclimation process is getting used to the salt. However, for us x-dippers, I really think the major point of acclimation is cut and texture.

A while back I posted a thread especially for dippers. It's called "A dipper's Guide to Snus". In it I addressed something of this issue. You can check it out if you would like.

                    http://www.snuson.com/viewtopic.php?t=4014

However before you go I think it is important to step back and reset your expectations. Rather, than trying to find a Swedish dip come at snus as something similar but new. I think some of the worst products out there are those that try to be an American dip like snus. My advice is to avoid them (unless it is just going to have to be your gig).

Come to terms with snus. Appreciate it for all the things that it is and then learn to adjust for those things you miss about dipping.

That said, a few months back in the “Talk with the Professional” section of the forum I pleaded with the Swedish Match reps to develop a snus with the taste and feel of Copenhagen. Brother, I assure you, there would always be a can of it in my rotation and that can would always be open. There are times when a man has got to go and spit for a while.

Do I lower lip snus? Absolutely. But the finer cut means that more is lost by spitting than with dip. Thus you learn to adjust your technique, which snus brands work best and you go with it form there. But in the end- and I cannot stress this enough- the pay off is well well worth the effort. I put down dip some 2 ½ years ago and I have never regretted it and I have never looked back.

I hope this helps and keep us posted on your progress- just remember clear the expectations and let the wonderful world of snus do the rest.

Rowdy- I'm going to stick this post over on the dipper's guide because I think that there are a lot of folks that have found and will find the same thing. As you go along, I would really appreciate it if you would add your experiences and finding to that thread. Thanks mate
When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

Just try and try, be happy that you got all snus available what is on the markets ; ) I had very hard time with lös because few of my friends who snused here in Finland used lös, it took a while but I got the idea after the first can, and I think it was grov lös. Very sad that I cant really get so often what I want like many others in EU, they must just buy what they get. =F

I too came to snus from dip and can say that snus is a whole different world. It's a better world but it takes a bit to get use to some of the differences.

As has been suggested already you need to go into the "snus experience"with an open mind, try out a number of different ones and hang in it for a little while. It takes time for one to adjust to the different flavors and textures before you can begin to appreciate snus(los or portion) for what it is.

In my experience grovsnus is the closest thing overall to cope in a snus, even at that it's still different on a number of levels. For cut, texture and overall mouthfeel i prefer gotlands over any other los but they offer a limited range of flavors. The flavors they do offer have a distinct herbal bitterness to them which i happen to like but ruins this snus for others.YMMV

Try snus that has is cut more coarse. Goteborg's Rape is ultra fine-cut. Try Grov or General; they are very coarse. Most sites that sell snus will tell you how fine or coarse loose snus is.
