My Roda Lacket is about 3 weeks old. I've kept it in and out of refrigerator. Never had it sit in extreme heat. There is about 1/4 of a tin left. The last few servings seem to be going sour in my mouth after 5 minutes. It isn't set to expire until Nov 14. Does it just turn bad sometimes?
Does Snus go Sour?

I have yet to have any problems with Snus going bad, I know others here have talked about it drying out, or even just getting a whole tin that is sour.
Is this tin out your shipment that took forever to arrive? If so, maybe it just spent way to long in a hot distribution center.

Yes it is a tin that took a long time to arrive. I guess its life span was greatly reduced. I just received a new shippment of snus. I put that in the freezer. My tins are lasting a long time after I open them because I am sampling them. I think I will open one at a time from now on. Do the white portions age better outside of refrigeration?Originally posted by alexI have yet to have any problems with Snus going bad, I know others here have talked about it drying out, or even just getting a whole tin that is sour.

in my experience, white portions never go bad.
they are so dry and salty to start with, so I don't think
any amount of bacteria can live in that stuff.
but to be honest, I have never experenced sns to go sour at all.
the taste may change a bit as it get's drier, but not go sour.
But I buy most of my snus in stores and don't get them shipped
across the atlantic. the only time I have large amounts of
snus at home is when I go to sweden to buy it.

I have my snus shipped from Sweden to Costa Rica regularly.
It usually takes 8-10 days, and I've never had any problem.
Contents are super fresh when opened, and remain fresh for the 3-4 days I take to snus it.
Onley once, half a can of Roda got dry and hard like a rock (the can dropped under my car seat, and I forgot about it for 5 days !! )

snus actually does go bad, that's why they come in fridges. of course since you're in Norway you have better access so you may think they never go bad because you haven't had the conditions for them to go bad...I think Norway is a bit colder than the US as wellOriginally posted by Stargazerin my experience, white portions never go bad.

sometimes snus has an ammonia smell to it, an indicator that it has been in less than optimum temperatures to stay fresh.
they don't contain the preservatives that cans of dip do. it's not so much bacteria that forms in snus, it's the chemical reactions that occur that cause it to ferment. Dip even goes bad, but takes considerably longer and is never refrigerated (but can be to lengthen the freshness).
as a former dip user, it has taken me a bit to get used to not spit with snus. I've noticed containers of dip spit start to smell a long time after containers of snus spit start to smell...which is really horrible. they're both horrible smelling when that occurs, but I've noticed snus to be atrocious...i believe mainly because of it's lack of preservatives.
at least that's my understanding thus far.

Other things also get a weird taste after sitting in the FRIDGE for a while. The FREEZER though prevents that happening too soon.
A good way to absorb odors (that perhaps you yourself might not even notice anymore since it's your own fridge) is to place an open box of baking soda in the fridge. (Arm & Hammer anyone? )

I have had my most recent package for a few days or so and I noticed that with in 3 or 4 days my skruff stark portions began to have an acrid and almost chemical/phenolic taste to it. this was extremely disapointing as it was my favorite to that point. I tried it on probably 5 more times hoping it was just a weird reaction to whatever taste I had in my mouth prior to snus but every time it turned foul after 5 mins or so. It may have something to do with the fact that the skruff seemed to be most affected by the heat in that the portions were heavily saturated with the dark juice and much harder than the other portions. I was going to ask this same question when i read this post.

have you tried airing them out?Originally posted by aolsonI wanted to add that they have all been stored in the refrigerator since they arrived
like leaving the lid off the tin for about a half hour or so. maybe less...
I heard gustavus snus tastes really funky at first, but if left to air out it tastes normal.
not really sure if this would help...just an option to try out.
perhaps your notion that it might be reacting with some present taste in your mouth is true and maybe really doing a thorough cleaning of your mouth might elimintate that possibility if it isn't just to be sure...
