Starting up, Staining, Purified and Questions

I just started snusing yesterday, when I drove clear across town to the only tobacconist in my city that carries real snus. He only had General, and I bought one tin of each he had:

    Portion
    White Portion
    Mini Mint
    Los
-and a free sample pack that could have let me find out what I liked, but he only gave it to me after I paid him for the four tins.

The original portion stained my teeth right away, and I still have an unopened tin in the fridge that I can't really see myself using. Other than that, I've only tried the white, which I really enjoy.

Now, my top ten try-out box has already shipped from northerner, and there's a lot of original portion snus in there. Can I expect all of it to stain my teeth?

Also, I don't have any tools to form the los; can anyone recommend a method for hand-baking it?

Edit: And what's the deal with Wise/Oomph and the 3mg/6mg portions? I was looking at them on northerner. Do we really pay more for half the dose? The number of portions seems the same. And is "purified" really safer? Does it taste as good?

I could not stand Oomph. I purchased the 6g portions, and they are very small, look cheap, and are very dry. I shouldn't have to lick or wet something THAT MUCH (I do prewet some snus, but geez). Apparently the 3g portions have more flavor, but I wasn't about to make another bad investment.

I brush about 4-6 times a day and have not noticed any real staining, but Im a new user. I do see some browning of the teeth through the day but it brushes away.

I also rinse my mouth between loads and occasionally wipe my teeth down with a napkin.

Im pretty sure that snus does stain the teeth but I try to keep it under control and its no worse than cigarettes and coffee (better actually, but Ive upped the brushing).

I snus regularly (about 5-6 portions a day), and haven't noticed any staining. I use whitening toothpaste and mouthwash.

The oomph really is a strange breed. Not something i care for, and have read nothing that shows it is "safer"

I too have never had much staining issues. but those that have, it seems to be only certain snus. So don't stress about the other regulars. I would wager you will find that staining isn't a frequent problem.

Worst case, stick with the whites. All I generally use now, but that is only becasue i really prefer the more muted taste of whites to regular portions. But you really should have no staining issues with the whites.

oomph is awful...I agree with chadizzy, they just looked and tasted very cheap. Taste like crap too. Not worth it.

As far as a method to use for the los, you could either order a Prismaster (Getsnus would probably have it to you soonest: http://www.getsnus.com/snus/accessor...6&n=Prismaster

Or you could cut off the end of a syringe (can get just a syringe without a needle from any pharmacy for very, very cheap, I suggest 3ml) and use that. You would just pull back the plunger, put it in the can to get some, compact it against your thumb or the lid and pop it in your mouth.

If you end up liking los, you could invest in an Icetool (awesome accessory but does cost around $40).

              Happy snus'n!

Thank all of you for the advice! Two more questions:

So far, I've been doing 3-5 portions a day. Once I take the snus out of the fridge and open it, how long is it good for?

I've noticed the General Dry Mini Mint are white portions. Are all minis white? If not, how do I know which are and aren't before buying them?

Weeks and weeks really. Honestly, if it is a snus you are using one or two a day of, put it back in the fridge. Otherwise, don't stress it, it will be fine.

Not ALL minis are white (actually, maybe they are now that Mocca+ is gone)
So yeah, don't know of any mini's now tat aren't white, but that should be changing real soon.

Lol, I got that OOMPH crap in my first smapler pack, the flavor is actually great but the size (or lack thereof) and dryness made it a no-go from thereon out.

@ POSTER: It stained your teeth right away? Man ive been snusin for a while and my teeth are white as hell. Just got back from the dentist 2 weeks ago and still no cavities to date!

Yeah, General Original Portion. It was my first Swedish snus, and I popped it in to survive the two-hour wait at the DMV. I loved it, but when I got back into my truck, I looked in the mirror and my front teeth were brown. I was pretty embarrassed about it. My sonicare still hasn't gotten rid of all of it, but it's mostly gone.

i know it's been said "stop smelling the snus", does it also need to be said, "don't eat the snus"?

I didn't chew it or anything...

I did smell it first, and I was completely happy with the aroma.

It was just the juices dripping down. I couldn't believe it stained.
