    New to the Snus

What's up fellas? I just recently tried the Camel Snus Frost and was impressed, start reading about Snus and everyone says it sucks compared to Swedish brands. So I want to know what brands I should try.

I was looking at this brand
    http://buysnus.com/snusbrand/Elixyr_...y_portion.aspx

Because I like energy drink and such, anyone tried it?

    First, welcome to Hessian Omega

I am Snuson's official champion of Elyxr, but please stay away from it for now. It tastes bad, and is unlike any other snus out there. Once you have your feet planted in the snus world, then try it and see if it's useful. If you do a search here, you will find my many, many MANY posts extolling the functional brilliance of Elyxr, but it tastes like a**.

Now, as far as recommendations. Go to either buysnus.com or northerner.com and check out their try out boxes. Swedish snus is so much different than Camel, hard to know what you will like or not.

So start with one of the tryout boxes. And then tell us what you liked and didn't like. That will help us guide your future choices.

And again, welcome. And please stay away from the Elyxr until it is time.

Northerner has a great deal on what the call their "Top 10 Box" and it only costs $23.49

        http://www.northerner.com/snus/North...us%20Box-2604/

        It includes the following:

        Göteborgs Rapé White Portion
        Catch Eucalyptus White Portion
        Wise Citrus/Menthol 6mg
        Ettan Portion
        Skruf Stark Portion
        General Portion
        Lucky Strike Original Portion
        Nick (and Johnny) Original Portion
        Röda Lacket White Portion
        Grovsnus Portion

This is about as good of a deal as you will find and gives you a strong idea about what Swedish snus is all about

I can imagine that if someone, like Sagedil (lots of helpful posts, by the way) who has enjoyed real Swedish snus for a long while, tried a Camel flavor, the initial response might be:
"What the hell is this candy-turd? If I wanted to chew gum, I'd chew gum!"

I, like half of the other new people on this forum, started with the Camel (for me, because I was looking for a way to take less smoke breaks during work -- and hated the idea of spitting into a cup).

I was so impressed with the easy-to-enjoy flavor, convenience and nicotine delivery -- that I had to learn more and try (lots) more.

At first I thought I'd probably never like any of the "pure tobacco" flavors and started out with some minty-stuff and flavored stuff. Boy, was I wrong. Right now I have a Lucky Strike portion in, and before that a Skruf.

I've actually had some difficulty finding a Swedish snus that I don't like (though some are definitely better than others -- but, like everyone says, you've gotta try some and decide).

A few that I've enjoyed a lot in my short Snus career and why:

-LD Black and Oden's Extra Stark (both "licorice" flavored) -- I've always liked Euro-style salty black licorice and it translates into tobacco very well. The Oden's was probably the best transition from Camel to regular tobacco styles I could have had -- because it had enough of the non-tobacco flavor I thought I was looking for, and enough nicotine to almost knock me on my ass the first time. The Oden's and LD made me want to *really* see what else was out there.

-Lucky Strike/Pall-Mall -- These were the first "non-flavored" ones I really enjoyed a lot. Maybe it was just the name-recognition that made it so easy for me -- who knows? Note on the Lucky: at first I liked white portions more, but I'm liking regular portions better as I get more experience.

-Ettan/Goteborg's Rape'/General -- I only group those three because they're really popular on this forum. And because of that, on my second order, I tried them all. They're popular for a reason... I doubt I'll ever have the kind of refined taste-buds to allow me to describe snus like a wine-connoisseur -- but if I did, I'd start with these. All I know is, they have some really nice flavors that I've never smelled or tasted in an American tobacco product.

              Anyway -- that's one Snoob's advice/info to another.
              -Ragnar

((note: I went from a pack-and-half a day smoker to a 4 cigarette a day smoker -- mainly because I just choose Snus over cigarettes most of the time. I tried to swap smokes for "chew" once, a long time ago, and I just hated the smell, taste, feel, mess of it and went right back to smoking...))

LOL, I was actually using snus for at least 6 months when Camel came out, And Raleigh was a very early test market. I loved the Spice, and the rest weren't bad. My problem was never the sweetness, although that was a lot different. In fact, I really, really enjoyed the Spice, and bought it occasionally. Still have about half a tin in my fridge!!

My problem with camel is really just the less than optimal nicotine delivery. Much like a mini, it is just not enough for me. About a year ago, I had run out of snus (before I started hoarding) and was going to the store to buy some Camel,. When was there, just opted for cigarettes instead, as the Camel just wasn't potent enough.

But you have NEVER seen me bash Camel. I do laugh now at the great divide, the few of us here who are so crusty we predate the arrival of Camel. My fear in the early days was just that folks who came to snus via Camel might have trouble adjusting. But at least here, most seem to adapt pretty quickly. And the more potent nicotine delivery is a big sell.

I actually only tried Camel AFTER using Swedish Brands for over a year.

The frost isnt bad and I really do enjoy the Mellow.

Camel catches too much flack because its American.

Its really not bad and I will dare say its my First Choice over Triumph.

The mellow has this almost mild coffee taste that comes through after a lil while and is no way too sweet...nor is the frost.

Compared to swedish snus id say V2 has some offerings that are sweeter than Camels.

Camel is good snus and I prefer it to say Gustavus, Kronan and a few others that just taste terrible to me.

To each his own, but I think camel actually did snus right and the tins are nice also.

Of course I dabble only in Swedish Snus using Gotlands Gul Los, General Los and a couple brands of portions ( rarely ) , but sometimes I just feel like having Camel Mellow so I drive about 1 minute to the station grab a can, sold cold, and pop one in.

For the cost its not worth it, 5 bucks for 15 portions but I actually think they are good and the portion is somewhere between a mini and elongated regular portion.

Just wish I couldve tried the Spice flavor.

All the ranting aside I agree wioth sagedil on ordering a sampler out then going through each and remember the ones you really loved, the ones you couldnt figure out you liked and ones you hated, then in a few months order the ones you couldnt tell you liked and ones you hated and you will be suprised as I garuntee youll find 2 brands out of that group you now really enjoy.

At least that seems to be the trend when people first start using snus.

I hated Gotlsnds at first ( couldnt taste ANYTHING ) and now its my favorite.

Love Goteborgs Rape and now just dont care for it.

Snus is a wonderful world in that there are so many flavor profiles youll never be bored.

                  And welcome.

As the representative of the almighty General Zod on the planet Houston allow me to welcome you to the forum. Elixyr Energy snus has caffeine which you may like but it tastes like ammonia and Lysol mixed with essence of unwashed socks. You didn't mention whether or not you were or are a smoker or smoker wanting to quit. If you are the later check out some of the great monster-nic snus.

I would say the sample box is great so far, I think I have 5 or 6 cans open along with a few tins I selected myself, one being the elyxir.

if you smoke alot like I did the flavors will be hard to taste, real snus tastes much different than the camel snus, definately better.

after some of the herbal flavors I find myself wanting sen sen and horehound candies.

                          I placed an order tonight.

                          Still enjoying my Camel snus.

I am not a smoker, never was much into tobacco aside frm the occasional cigar. Tried this stuff though and it seems pretty great.

One thing you may like to try out if you enjoy Camel Frost is General Wintergreen. It is my new baby, having just discovered it at my local tobacco shop in one of General Snus' sampler packs. I have 5 cans of it on the way right now. I believe it is USA-only, which is kind of odd for a Swedish snus company, but you can get it from www.getsnus.com, a USA-based snus company. You can get the same General sampler-pack that I got. It is very cheap, and gives you 3 portions of 4 different General snus:

                            http://www.getsnus.com/snus/index.as...uctory_Sampler

I deal almost exclusively with getsnus.com just because it is a US-based company with speedy shipping. 90% of the time you get speedy shipping with Swedish companies as well, but sometimes customs can slow down an order and it always seems to happen at the worst possible times.

Also, just keep in mind that Swedish snus is salty (the way that snus is supposed to be) and not sweet like the Camel variety. Most people are quite taken-aback when they first try the Swedish kind, but stay with it, and you will be a certified Camel Snus hater like the rest of us
