    N&J vs. General

K, I know the General is supposed to rock (and I do love Onyx). And its pretty good, but its a bit mellow (no sting) AND it has a heavy basic aftertaste.

Am I the only person getting this?

I put my money down for N&J because its not as basic, maybe a little too salty, but oh well.

Am I nitpicking? Do y'all just get used to the basic taste? Sometimes a trickle hits the back of my tongue and I just gag, gag gag... too bitter.

Maybe someone can point an inexperienced snuser as myself in the right direction. I really want a snus that is kinda tangy, decent kick, but without the basic aftertaste. Any suggestions?

Yeah I mentioned the caustic taste in other threads.

    Try Claq Qui.

I dunno everyone's different in what they prefer and how they react to the ingredients in snus.

The best sterks in my opinion are N&J West and Skruf stark white.

General and N&J are two of my favorites. I guess I don't understand what you mean by aftertaste, but neither on makes me gag...

I presume he's referring to General Extra Sterk btw.

To clarify, I'm not talking about Extra Sterk, that was very bitter-from the onset.

Don't get me wrong, I do like General, a lot actually. The gagging occurs with General Original Portions. I'll be specific. I like portions when they begin to run and get juicy. However, when General runs, I get a distinct basic flavor on the back of my tongue, like baking soda. Its not always strong enough to induce gagging, but a few times is enough. Now I make sure to toss the portion after 20 min. This does not occur with N&J, my other standby, it turns sour/tangy after a while. And I like that.

And, thank you BakerBarber. I will try Claq Qui. Much appreciated.

Come to think of it, I almost always have something to drink while I snus. That may be why I don't notice any aftertaste...

One of the insiders explained that before it's flavored, all snus is very bitter. It makes sense that after a while that bitterness is going to come through.

N&J wins for me. General is still one of my favorites. I don't get any negative effects from either. Personally I gaged when I used Phantom blue, Phantom original is a little more tolerable but I still don't like it.

That sounds kind of odd to me. I get no caustic taste at all from General, and I snus 24/7 and quite often have no drink.

Honestly, N&J West Strong is very close to General IMHO. Those are also my two favorites, and the only snus I ever order anymore. I would just order General Sterk, but it is nice to have a minuscule amount of variety, even when I am a brand snob.

FIW, I have never cared for General. Why I am a bit excited about the free samples I am getting, figure it is time to give it another try.

But Nick & Johnny is wonderful. definitely a noticeable taste, a bit citrusy, but always WAY more interesting for me tan General. With all the new starks, it has been a few months since I had any, but I will remember to order it next month.

fugitiveinkblot, everyone's tastes will differ a bit. Snus is so unique in this way. The only thing you can do is patiently keep trying snus, and come back to snus you may not like at first. often, the 2nd, or 3rd attempts will suddenly open up a whole world of taste you didn't get at first.

Honestly, it took about 15 months for me to really stabilize, feel comfortable with the stable of 20 -25 snuses I now like.

General all the way. It was my first, and I still like it so it's also the one brand I've used for the longest amount of time.

N&J is good in it's own right, but I'd really prefer it in regular strength form. I'm still bummed that I was not into los when N&J los was still around, though...

Yah, N&J for me, too. Didn't like General Sterk or Ekstra Sterk, and Onyx is okay. And yeah, Claq Qui is awesome. It definitely fills an important void in my portion rotation, for being strong with a mild sweetness.

I love General, especially in los form. However the liquid smoke is murder on my throat.

The only General I actually enjoy is the loose. The original portions don't thrill me too much and I find that the whites don't have enough taste. I used to like Onyx a lot, but not too much these days.

As for N&J, the loose was wonderful. I was very upset when SM decided to discontinue it. I feel bad for the people who never got to try it. I'm not much into strong brands anymore (except for the occasional can Skruf Stark loose), but if they brought back N&J loose I'd definitely order a roll. The flavor was exquisite.

According to Svarthvitt (whom I secretly suspect is a Swedish Match agent), the upcoming General Ekstra Sterk loose is very similar to N&J loose, which is exciting, since I came to snus just a bit too late to experience it.
