    Review - Grov Svart (Black)

This came in along with the Claq Qui and General Ekstra Sterk - here's how I saw it.

    Presentation
It comes in a can which is just like regular Grov portions with a smart black label - the portions inside are black coloured but not star arranged like the General Onyx - apart from that the portions themselves look just like Onyx but all jumbled up.

    Taste & Smell
The initial smell is weird! Slightly vanilla-y, but also smelling a lot of ammonia like Nick & Johnny does. The taste is quite neutral apart from the vanilla overtones - just faint tobacco.

    Nicotine
It's like a regular stark - just like Onyx or Nick & Johnny - the hit is large but not massive.

    Overall
I don't know why on earth they chose the Grov brand to use with this particular snus. It bears no resemblance to Grov apart from the can. For a start Grov means course in Swedish and this product is ultra fine snus in a portion - the consistency is like Onyx or Roda Lacket.

I think this is just General Onyx with a much more subtle flavouring to it - but they are not doing the branding right there either because it doesn't have the classy packaging or star formation inside and it's not at a premium price which just makes me think "why can't they make Onyx, which I prefer, at this price?"

I've just got a roll of this in today as well, but haven't tried it. I suspect that they used the Grov name because it associates more with the rough and tumble sort of masculine image - Grov is a manly man's snus, or at least that's the image it seems to project. If you're going to make a super stark version of snus, I guess that's a good image to draw on.

Another good review squeezy. Just curious though is this a snus that you might buy again? On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best snus you ever tried, what would you give it?

Well, if it doesn't really taste like Grov, then I'm in. I have never been a fan of Grov, but this new one sounded interesting, so I thought I would toss a tin on the next order.

        Thanks for the review. 8)

Actually (and this is a very personal opinion - so don't let it stop you trying it) - I thought it was one of the worst new snuses to come out in ages - I've had 3 portions of it and don't think I'm likely to finish the can. I think it's probably a 3 for me (if Skoal original is a 1!). There's something un-nerving about something that has a fragrance like a body shop smell and then is a stark portion with loads of salt.

          I think I just don't get it!

Yep, Grov is actually one of my favourites!

It has that thick tobacco taste, yum yum!

I have some on order so i'll definately try it. I was just curious. Are you going to let it sit for about 10 days to see if the smell / flavors mellow out a bit? It could be just really fresh snus that hasn't settled yet. (probably not though). Anyway might be worth giving it a shot.

That's good advice! I've done that in the past and it's been worth it for a couple of snuses. It's sitting on my desk at the moment because I'm still going back to it in the disbelief that something so horrible can come from the same company that just invented the Claq Qui which I'm absolutely loving!

I really hope you enjoy it and that it's only me!

                All the best

Having had a few of these over the weekend, I wouldn't exactly say it doesn't have the Grov taste. The base tobacco is definitely that dark, distinctive Grov flavour, but with a hint of vanilla on top. Definitely a nice portion.

                          My review

Well, it's vanilla dominant snus like everyone else says, with a hint of licorice/anise.

If you like heavily flavored snus (like Gotland Grey), you'll probably like this. But if you're looking for Grov flavor in a stark portion, you'll be disappointed. It DOES perform very well as a portion, just like other black portions (onyx)- very comfortable with the perfect amount of juice.

Not roll worthy, but I certainly won't be tossing the can. The flavor is good, but is pretty much void of "tobacco flavor."

Yeah, I also tasted a hint of anis. It's very faint, but there...more like the memory of anis, almost.

You know the two letters "i" and "u" are right next to eachother on the keyboard right? :^D
