Ramblings of a slightly intoxicated snus newbie!!

Well I made the dive into snus about 1 week ago. I started off with the Camel Snus. It tasted good to me at the time, although hella sweet like a piece of candy. I had no idea how real swedish snus tasted and on all the message boards I have read nobody actually describes the taste/sweetness, flavor, saltiness, howl long it lasts etc. etc. Well after a week of using the camel snus, I tried Frost and Spice with Frost being my favorite I took the plunge and ordered some snus from northerner.com one night at my buddies house while drinking. I couldn't even remember what the hell I ordered, that's how hammered I was! Anyway, I ordered:

    Shruf Tranbar (cranberry)
    The Northerner Energy Snus (Dry)
    Skruf Stark
    Roda Lacket
    Probe Whiskey
    Onyx
    Jacobbsen's Ice Fruit

Well after I received it, I popped in a Roda Lacket and it tasted pretty bad. Keep in mind I was used to the Camel stuff which was super sweet. The salty taste was initially overwhelming. Additionally, I never liked the taste of pure tobacco by itself. Well my gums are kinda stinging from the saltiness of the pouches. The skruf tranbar is pretty good once you get used to it. There is a subtle cranberry taste and the nicotine is pretty consistent. I'm definitely going to keep at it, as other posts I read say that the gum sensitivity due to the salt will go away.

I just can't go back to smoking. I tried to smoke and the shit tastes horrible. I could only smoke half a cigarette before I threw it down. So it's back to snus. I just wish they were a tad sweeter and you got more flavor out of it. I don't know.

    GIMME SOME FEEDBACK PLEASE!!!

Once you adjust to the saltiness, you'll start to crave it. Personally, I like the more pure tobacco snus, but lots of people love the flavored varieties. Try the Catch line from Swedish Match. The minis don't assault you with too much nicotine at once, and they flavors are more to the sweet side of snus. Also, Probe whiskey from SM is a sweeter tobacco flavored snus with a hint of whiskey flavoring. I like it a lot, anyway. Loose snus tend to be a little less salty, with the exception of Ettan, which is VERY salty, but in a good way; also, the aftertaste reminds me of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is try lots of different flavors, you're bound to find a bunch you like. A lot. Others you may not be crazy about at first, but give them time; I find that I can find something about each snus that I like, some just take a bit of time to grow on me.

Oh, and welcome to SnusOn! I look forward to hearing about your experiences, I have yet to see someone come to the forum and say, gee, this just isn't for me...

      I have...once :^P

Once you get used to the Swedish snus, you should begin to appreciate the subtlety of the flavors, and won't like the Camel as much. I was into the Camel at first also, and real Swedish snus was a bit of a shock. Now when I have Camel, the initial sweet flavor still tastes good, but I end up fixating on the nasty aspertame bitterness that's always in the background. Swedish flavors are more challenging at first, but imo are more rewarding in the long run.

I started with dumaurier snus, probably near identical (but canadian version) of camel/marlboro. I hated the mini pouches, not satisfying at all, after my first order from Sweden, I have never even thought about buying SNUS local, it's that much better.

Welcome to the site. Sounds like you need to get some Triumph mint. Its real swedish snus made by Swedish Match and distributed by Lorillard in the USA. Its made for american tastes. It is the sweetest of all the swedish snus and I guarantee you will end up spitting it out long before the flavor disappears. Yea it lasts for hours. I've been useing them since before they were actually marketed anywhere and I never spit one out that was flavorless. If you want to try a sweet tobacco flavored snus then try the Triumph original.
          lots o luck, PP

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Okay so I just opened the Probe Whiskey and popped on in. Boy is this good!. It's not super salty like the others, and has an underlying sweetness with a smooth tone of whiskey that is very light. This is the best snus I've tasted so far. Skruf Stark is also pretty good. Next I will try the General Onyx. It smells good too. I now have seven cans of open snus. Can I put some back in the freezer, or do I have to keep them in the fridge? How long can I keep them in the fridge without them going bad?

You can refreeze them. Pop them in a zipper bag and try to get all the air out so the freezer doesn't dehydrate them.

The snus won't really go bad in the fridge, but it might dry out or lose some flavor.

Man, when I got my first shipment I had like 12 or so different cans open at once. It's cool, you gotta try them all.

Going one at a time would take forever to weed out what you do and do not like.

Thanks all for all of the great feedback. I've now tried all of the cans that I ordered. So far, the Probe Whiskey is the best, followed by General Onyx, and Skruf Stark. I still haven't gotten the courage to try the Roda Lacket again. It was the first one I tried and wasn't used to swedish snus yet so I didn't like it. I will take the advice given and place another order in a week or so. I don't want to order too much, then again I'm lying. I'll probably drop $75-100 on my next order. Happy snussing.

OH, I FORGOT TO ASK, DOES CONSTANT SNUSSING YELLOW YOUR TEETH?

Seriously if you practice good oral hygiene it's better than smoking is on your teeth.

Welcome to the board! I have found several brands that IMO don't really drip and discolor your teeth. These include the Gotlandssnus brands and Jakobsson's and Retro by F&L, and Taboca portions. Gustavas, one of my faves drips pretty bad as does Ettan.

Yeah, the good thing about snus is, that someone who switches from smoking to snus is, in every regard, in a win/win situation.

I guess, we all have been fooled by some propaganda (by the anti-tobacco-workers, by the cigarette-manufacturers or even by some well meaning people), but from my experience, if snus equals yellow teeth, then cigarettes equal black teeth. It's that simple ... and i'm not joking.

                        Cheers!
