The General and the Skruf have a pretty strong ammonia smell to them, Also, I cant really taste either of them.
Is that normal at first, I just got my order yesterday?
I found that when I first started using snus I sometimes detected a whiff of ammonia, but these days I only smell the brand and the flavour.
I've also come to associate brands with other smells. For example when I now smell a cup of Earl Grey in the office I think of "General" or "Göteborgs Rapé" when drinking gin....
Despite this whenever I open a can of snus near one of my friends they go "That is a pretty funky smell" and I just stare at them uncomprehendingly.
Must be the way your taste and sense of smell adjust after using snus for a while..
I have that problem with all los. I thought I was crazy!
Now that I've been using it for a few days, I don't notice it as much as I used to. I think it's because they add things (probably NOT ammonia, though) to bring the pH up, because nicotine crosses the mucous membranes more easily in a basic environment. I remember reading about it; they do that a lot with American dip.
It definitely smells just like ammonia to me, very strongly, but only los for some reason. I even smell it in Ettan, which is supposedly only tobacco, water, and salt.

That's reassuring. As the days go by, I find the smell getting less and less strong. Also, the first time I smelled General portion I thought someone had replaced my order with Earl Grey tea as a joke
I can only hope that in time, my Goteborgs Rape will taste like gin. My tastes are changing as I grow up, and I find I rather like gin, even though when I was younger I wouldn't touch it.
I just took a few whiffs of my Skruf (probably shouldn't say that in public), pretending I'd never smelled it before. I can understand how people would interpret the same smell differently, and how the tang of the scent could seem like ammonia. My mother things snus smells like old sweaty socks. I think it smells like tobacco.
I just received a can of Skruf Original Portion from Northerner and it has a fairly distinct, though weak, smell of ammonia. I know this has been discussed...
I don't expect everyone to read my encylopedia entry of a post, but I'd definitely appreciate some suggestions on what to order next. I've been lurking...
Hey guys, I'm not sure if this has been posted yet or not, but I just wanted to pass along a tip I found this week when I started messing with ways to...
Skruf is produced in the forests of Småland in the southern part of Sweden and fresh water from the forest lakes are used in the production. Only the best tobaccos are used in the making of Skruf and the famous Swedish standards for production of snus are of course being met. Skruf as a company has a strong focus on environmental issues and are working hard ...
