Most people can't even pronounce Snus correctly and argue with me (seriously) that it rhymes with "bus," not "moose." And I think the estimate of Snus as 2% of cigar sales is EXTREMELY generous. Probably closer to .02%.

I work in a big chain of convenience stores in PA, OH, WV, MD, VA, and NC (I have worked in PA and now in NC) so I have some experience on the other side of the counter when it comes to American Snus. I have a few regulars (two I can think of right now) that buy American Snus. One gets two tins of Camel Robust (I think... Red can) every few days and the other gets Marlboro every couple days. On rare occasion we have the smoker who gets a can because he is going to a function where he can't smoke or has a coupon from Marlboro or Camel. Camel Frost is the best seller overall, and the Camel vender makes sure we have it stocked. We often end up wasting Skoal Snus.

When I found out another chain pf convenience stores in PA carried Ettan, I went to get some and the kid at the counter had tried it (not sure whether he tries Los or potion)... He said it was like the stuff pilgrims used and that he almost vomited.... Lol. He didn't even know it was Snus, since they market it as snuff in US.

I once found an empty General refrigerator at a smoke shop in the mall. It's the only one I ever found where I used to live in PA.

A chain of tobacco shops in North Carolina carries General. The closest one to me is a half hour away, and the only time I went they had month old stock in the cooler. The lady working said I was only the second person to ever have interest in the product, then retracted when she realized I was the person who called about it the day before... Lol. I was the only person to ever show interest in the General. She said she would order more now that she knows someone will buy it, but I prefer shopping at Snuson (the only site that will verify my age) since I don't have to travel an hour round trip, get fresher product, and get WAY more options.

I'm not sure how to make Swedish Snus successful in the US. I was never a dipper (tried some Skoal Xtra pouches and Grizzley pouches before), do I don't really know how the product compares. I know it's completely different from US Snus and that someone who is used to Camel and Marlboro will need more than a pouch or two of General or Jak's to appreciate it. I like the idea of keeping stock in bars and pubs, especially with the growth of the non-smoking movement.
Snus isn't quite ready for convenience stores, well...not real snus anyway. The reason is that a convenience store clerk doesn't have the time to fully explain the differences between dip, American snus and authentic Swedish snus. A full time tobacconist in a full service smoke shop can and does take the time to educate his clients. Convenience stores are about speed...in and out, while tobacconists want their customers to come in and spend some time, ask questions, etc.

Now, I'm not saying that the convenience channel doesn't have legs with regards to snus, but I do think it's premature to expect record sales there. Just because a product isn't at your local 7-11 doesn't mean it isn't selling well, or even growing in popularity with US consumers that frequent premium smoke shops and tobacconists ;-) Every day I get new retailers, and they're selling the product, because they continue to order. That's the benchmark of true growth.

We ALL have to take the time to educate as many people as possible...it helps ;-)

I personally see one current snus flavor that has the potential to open up the mind of close-minded americans who as has been mentioned, may judge the real stuff too quick. Jaks melon, i think this snus is brilliant in the way that it could really ease americans into other types. I really think it has a lot of potential.

for a complete listing of retailers carrying Jakobsson's, Thunder, Offroad, Oden's and Northerner brands go here

        www.snusdistribution.com

fyi...Tobacco Superstores in AR, TN & MS were just shipped their product and displays from their home office in AR. We were quick to add them to the site and they were slow to ship, lol. Product should be there today or tomorrow. Remember guys/gals...use your local retailers when you can because in most cases, our brands are less expensive at the brick and mortar locations because you don't pay UPS shipping. Not to mention the fact that your get your snus immediately ;-)

You also show demand, and give a bit of free advertising. It may only be one person at a time, but if you set off a lightbulb for the guy behind you buying cigarettes, it's better for us all. That's how viruses get going :^)

speaking on a larger scale (all oral tobacco) - no matter if it's snus, dip, snuff or anything in between is a very tiny market compared to smoking (most people already know that) hence, oral tobacco is quite at the bottom of the barrel, for various reasons (I've had the chance to offer snuff, snus and dip to at least 50 - 60 guys and they all were like "what the hell is that", "man it sticks like cow shit", "oh that stuff looks like mud I will never put it in my lip", "get that crap out of my sight I feel nausea" ... and I could go on for hours -

Being a totally new experience to the average smoker, they completely refuse to try in a large proportion
Another reason is that in our society, smoking is not tolerated any longer, imagine that snusing and snuffing in an office is quite hilarious these days - most commonly people tend to be disgusted by the habit of shaving snuff up your nose or putting dip in your lip (I've lived it, and been told to stop, lmao)

Quite hard altogether to get people to snus, I think that probably out of a 100% maybe 0.02% would continue snusing for a longer period of time.

Sadly, the other truth is that with small steps maybe snus could become much popular around the world than it is at the moment, however I can just imagine the "WAR" and conflicts of interests it would produce, if it reaches the "RIGHT" proportions. All the tobacco corporations would probably do anything to stop the "virus" from spreading, I know I'd do that if I owned a tobacco/cigarette company

educating people? I've tried to switch a few guys on a quitting smoking forum (well not tried) told them about snusing and that it can really stop the cravings for a good while and they were like "Disgusting" -

In the beginning, GN created the factory and the customers. The factory was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of Odens. And the Spirit of GN was hovering over the face of Odens. And GN said, “Let there be quality snus,” and there was quality snus. And GN saw that the snus was good. And GN separated the average from the good. GN called the light Extreme, and the darkness he called the EU. And there was Extreme and there was 9mg, the first day.

And GN said, “Let there be flavours. And GN made the flavours and separated these flavours from the expanse of old flavours. And it was so. And GN called the flavours Heaven. And there was Odens 59 and there was Wintergreen, the second day.

And GN saw that it was good.

And GN said, “Let Odens snus sprout lakrits, lime and burned apple.” And it was so. And GN saw that it was good. And GN said "Let there be snus of all flavours for all occasions.

So GN created the customer in his own image,
                  in the image of GN he created him;
male and female he created them.

And GN blessed them. And GN said to them, “Behold, I have given you every snus yielding tin that is on the face of all the earth, and every tobacco now go forth and buy the f**kers".
And it was so. And GN saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was www.odenssnus.com and there was legalised European snus, the sixth day.

And on the Seventh day, instead of jello Shooters with the company Ladies, GN took pity on PP and and went to the lab and revealed to the world a coffee (with a little Vanilla?) snus! GN looked out in wonder at the trail of brown down PP's pants and said, I have done well and good!Click image for larger version
