    Room temparature

I have been looking around but never found an answer for how long snus can stay in room temparature when unopened(while its not expired of course)

for how long until it will get bad and lose flavour and so on ?

'Room temperature' is a very subjective term due to location, etc.

    Human comfort and health

A comfortable room temperature depends on individual needs and other factors. According to the West Midlands Public Health Observatory (UK), 22 °C (71.6 °F) is the recommended living room temperature, and 18 °C (64.4 °F) is a good bedroom temperature.

However, this might not be true for countries found near the equator. As the temperature is higher, the room temperature is around 30°C (86 °F).

For snus, refrigeration/freezing is recommended for long-term storage.

Too many variables otherwise to come up with a definitive amount of time.

As WTB noted, it should be good flavor-wise through to the expiration date ..... otherwise, refrigerate/freeze.

Could you keep it outside, if it is cold there? Or is that a stupid question...?!

I'm in Sweden now, without a fridge, and I keep it outside. It's all in a bag hanging on the wall. Works just fine.

I actually wondered this same question myself. I received a roll of Oden's Extreme 59 los about 2 weeks ago. I purposely did not freeze this roll but left it in a kitchen cabinet. I have worked my way through about 4 cans now and have not noticed any degradation at this point. These cans of course have a unique snapping lid as well as a plastic wrap which may very well be at play here too.

With individual opened cans, I have noticed that the snus definitely starts drying out significantly at the 1 week mark as snus is routinely taken from the tin.

I like it better here in my room, but if it gets bad by doing that, then ill move it

snus doesn't go bad... It may get dried out a bit, But it doesn't go bad.... The best before date is just that.... It taste best if used by... It is not an expiration date that it goes bad... In or out of the fridge, But I prefer to put it in the fridge for the best flavor..... Just an FYI.

Hi Renico..I don't have a straight answer for you. I have personally used snus that has sat at room temp for about 8 weeks. Like others have said, the can had dried out somewhat and the portions weren't as comfy on my gums. Easy fix was to just spritz with some water and let sit for a couple hours. For as fast as this can dried out, I think that would be a bigger concern than the snus actually going bad. I'm no scientist but mold needs moisture right?? Anyway, I was browsing this site for something unrelated but came across this refrigeration faq:

                            Storage Swedish snus
How do you best store snus?
Snus is a perishable product and should be kept refrigerated to keep it fresh the longest. When stored this way, moist loose snooze can stay fresh up to 14 weeks and moist portions can last 20 weeks. Dryer products, like CatchDry, can last as long as 30 weeks.

If you need to store Swedish snus longer than that, we recommend that you freeze the can right away. This keeps it fresh for a year, if you pack the cans in an airtight freezer bag as we recommend. When you do thaw the frozen snus, put in the refrigerator first to ensure moister is retained evenly in the product. What’s more, when your snus is in the paperboard cans, the frozen cans should be thawed in a refrigerator so water does not condense on the paper or labeling and degrade these.

What happens when snus gets too old?
Most often old snus just dries out and looses much of its aroma and flavor. There is a very small risk that it will start to mold. Snus is not normally unhealthy when it gets too old but still, just like any food, if it smells bad, don’t use it.

We always label the snus cans with a ‘Best before’ date. When you keep it refrigerated, snus will usually stay fresh much longer than that date.

                            Can snus be stored frozen?
Freezing snus is just fine up to about one year, preferably wrapped in airtight freezing bags to ensure the snus doesn’t dry out. If you have loose snus in paper cans, you should remember to thaw the cans in the refrigerator to avoid condensation forming on the can (this can dissolve the glued edges of the can or label).

How long can you keep snus?
Much depends on how you store the snus. Since it is a perishable, snus is best kept refrigerated (4-8° C). When stored this way, moist snus can stay fresh up to 14 weeks, moist portions up to 20 weeks, and dry products (like CatchDry) 30 weeks. To store snus over longer periods of up to one year, we recommend freezing it.

When you do freeze snus, pack the cans in airtight freezing bags so it won’t dry out. And remember, if you have loose snus in paperboard cans, you should thaw the cans in the refrigerator to avoid condensation forming on the can (this can dissolve the glued edges of the can or label).

Can snus be frozen and used after it is thawed?
Yes, you can freeze snus this way, but this changes moisture levels and consistency a little. So the best way is to always store your snus in the fridge.

                            Can you re-moisturize Swedish snus?
Whenever the snus has dried out, it has been stored against our recommendations. And, the taste and aromas characteristics have changed irrevocably, so you can’t re-moisturize the product. It’s always best to store it properly in the refrigerator from the start so prevent the snus getting dry.
