    New store in central Pennsylvania

If anyone lives in central Pennsylvania, there is a store stocking real Swedish snus:

    Wilson's Meat's & Grocery
    4 South Delaware Ave
    Lewistown, PA 17044

Not refrigerated? Or at least in a cooler, like a wine cooler.

If the store is air-conditioned (and most are year-round), that wouldn't be a problem for me.

The accessibility factor should aid in moving the product.

If not, then it would be time to discuss it with someone responsible.

Northerner distribution rejects refrigeration as a requirement for snus storage. I agree with them. I prefer my snus chilled, but that's because I like cold snus. It isn't necessary, except for long term storage. It was started as a marketing gimmick by Swedish Match to take over snus in Sweden. It's been around so long now, that people take it as fact. It does do a good job of drawing attention to product, and distinguishing it from dip, but many stores don't have he room, or the inclination to feed a fridge energy for dubious gain.

I know and you know its not required but i wonder if there has been a study done if fridge vs non fridge plays a part in freshness/retention of moisture ?

Northerner(and partners) have looked at it, and going by memory, 14 weeks was acceptable for shelf storage. Colder will always be better for storage, but that has to be weighed with practicality. Hard freezing in a vacuum would be ideal, but that would be a very hard sell to stores, and it would make transport difficult.

Keep in mind, all of Northerner's snus is in plastic containers. SM's paperboard won't hold up as well to heat. It's all in how fast you move product though. If you get a delivery of Ettan lös once a week, and you sell it all in a week, shelf storage is fine. If it takes you a couple months to move it, the paperboard will lose too much moisture.

All of which proves that the snus most carried by CS retailers, Camel, does not even remotely need refrigeration especially since it comes in sealed metal cans. This means that the Camel fridge is a 100% pure marketing gimmick, their choice I suppose, but it sure seems like the gimmick would drastically decrease the enthusiasm of retailers for yet another specialty refrigeration unit. Kind of a slick move by Mordor, excuse me RJR, to squeeze the competition thusly but realization of their strategy is unlikely to endear them to the denizens of this forum. Consequently SM continuing to package in paperboard for the U.S. market thus requiring a fridge has a distinct aspect of shooting themselves in the foot especially since Northerner has wisely decided to eschew cold storage for their non SM marketing push. As for Altria's marketing who the hell cares? The only proper place for Marlboro "snus" is a dumpster in an alley.

When Triumph Snus existed, it was displayed on the cigarette shelf without refrigeration. Triumph was manufactured by Swedish Match, though Lorillard owned everything else. I never got a bad can. Perhaps SM knows that refrigeration is unnecessary.

There's another reason that retailers would readily accept Camel's fridges. Tobacco companies often tell retailers, we'll supply you product A in whatever quantity you need, but you must also stock products B, C, and D in X quantity. If you want to sell Camel cigarettes, you probably also need to stock their snus. Most places probably make back the energy cost of having the fridge running all month within the first day's sales of Camel cigarettes.

Jak's may be added in the future. The store owner asked me to pick 5 kinds to try and see how things go. If they go well, we may add another display with more varieties and Jak's Original, Mint, Wintergreen would be in those...

State College is the next area I want to get a retailer in. Do you have any suggestions? When I google for locations, there is one cigar shop that keeps coming up, but they don't seem to get good customer service reviews...
