    Montecristo Loose is a Gimmick

The can is cool as hell, can't deny that.

But, damn, I think this whole Cuban tobacco-snus thing is a giant rip off and a gimmick. First of all, the amount of snus you get in a can is very unsatisfactory. Secondly, the flavor to me tastes like soap...which brings back bad memories of adolescent cussing. At the very best, I find it to be an ok snus. I basically get over the soap taste and it does bake decently. However, I even find the nic fix a tad on the wimpy side. For the money, you could essentially get 10 free cans of Knox, 15 cans if you take in consideration the amount of snus in each can! (Admittedly, I haven't tried Knox yet and it kind of makes no sense for using it in my "Montecristo is overrated" thesis

I put Montecristo in a camp with many of the brands. I use it so that I don't waste it...and look forward to my true snus champions: Skruff strong both loose and portion, N and J, General Loose and Ettan or Lucky Strike with coffee.

    Just my opinion.

I dunno. I just opened my first tin of MC loose 2 days ago, (I bought 4) and and think the sharp tobacco flavor is fantastic. True, you don't get very much. It looks like they sort of spooned a dollop into the can, and it is pricey for what you get.

I don't think it will be a keeper snus for me either because of those reasons. There are plenty of other lös brands, Stark, Ettan, Gotland Yellow, Probe etc. that are either as good or almost as good, so MC isn't something I need. But I'm not going to criticize the quality. It's superb snus. It just doesn't justify the expense IMHO.

And yeah, the tin is really excellent.

I don't get a sharp tobacco flavor. Too me, Ettan and Grov epitomizes a nice tobacco taste, unhindered. With Monte, I get an over powering of that spice that starts with a B...lol. Weird thing, I find it enjoyable in skruf. Then again, there have been other flavors I have initially dissed then learned to love. But at the cost and the amount....there is no way I'm going to "work" at spending twice the amount of money.

that can sure is cool though...reminds me of a product from the turn of the century or something

        I enjoy the taste.

I do not enjoy the amount they give you.

This has become my new Gotlands Yellow. I use it once and awhile, but not in my regular rotation, due to the amount of snus contained in the tin.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll be sticking to Skruf Strong as well, and trying N and J.

That's pretty much how I feel about it.

              35g can

The MC loose product is produced for Sweden and Norway, which tax snus based on weight.

The past two years have seen massive excise increases, so loose, traditionally a 50g product, is in danger of dying a quick death. I saw a can of Skruf Loose in Oslo last month for 77 Norwegian Crowns, which is almost $15.

Gallaher went to 45g 2 years ago, and Swedish Match have just done so as well. If taxes continue to rise, don't be surprised if all loose goes to smaller gram-weights.

                Cuban Tobacco

From what I have heard, the Cuban cigar tobacco is present in MC and RyJ as part of the blend, and it indeed does impart distinctive flavor characteristics to both brand families.

Snus as a product is hi-nic stem, and in my experience, is primarily made of tobaccos sourced from India or the Philippines.

Most snus is highly flavored, so the key is allowing the tobacco taste to come through as part of the experience

Hey, gimmick or not, I love the flavor of the Montechristo Snus, I get a nice deep tobacco flavor, rich and smoky. It's expensive sure, but still costs about as much as a pack of smokes and lasts longer (for me anyway, a tin of montechristo would last 2 days, a pack of smokes, 1).

The change in weight of product has been covered here. Although they had to switch to 45g (at least on their label) to negate a tax hike, the 35g of MC is slightly disturbing once opening the tin. With the 50-45, there was little change, whereas, with the 35g tin, one can easily see off the bat that there is far less snus to consume.

I'm fine with it however, quality over quantity.

I dig MC loose. You don't get very much in the can, but I don't really mind because it isn't one of my daily brands. I probably use a pris or two per week. If I made a habit of ordering this stuff constantly, I'd be pissed off about the 35g. But seeing as how it was a one time purchase thing (at least until the US gets over it's persistent beef with Cuba), I'm not that upset.

I really like the flavor. I was afraid that it was going to have a big lemon taste based on the smell when I opened the can, but I didn't taste too much lemon when I put it in my mouth. The tobacco taste is lovely.

Good product, but I consider it a "special occasion" sort of snus.
