Just thought I'd say hi. And ask for recommendations :)

Hi all. I've been using snus off and on for about a year, since getting a mailer for a free can of Camel snus. I've been a smoker for nearly 20 years, and in years past to try and quit I'd dip. It worked fine, and I do enjoy a nice chaw every now and again. But it was annoying having to deal with the spit, and my precious lil tummy just couldn't handle swallowing it. Not to mention the loose dip all in my teeth and gums. So, after trying the Camel Frost snus and enjoying it for what it was, I decided to try The General, as it was sold at a local tobacco shop. "Man, this snus stuff keeps getting better!" I exclaimed to myself. From there I graduated to ordering different varieties online, mostly from buysnus.com, though some from Northerner.com. Buysnus's quicker shipping has made me a loyal customer though.

Sooo, now that I've bored you with my journey from nasty smoker to even nastier dipper and finally to refined and suave snusser here is where your advice will surely come in handy. Of all the snus I've had here are my quick reviews of some of them, and I'd love to get ideas for new ones to try. Apologies in advance if I get the names of some of these off, I am at work and all but 1 can is at home.

    Offroad

Mango Cream - So far my very favorite. I love the salty flavor with just a hint of sweatness.

Sweet Clove - Another I really, really enjoy. And I'm generally not much of a clove fan.

Chocolate Raspberry - I'd get this again.

Mandarin - Not bad, probably won't order again though.

Moonshine - Do not like. I'll do one if nothing else is available, but it has a sort of sweaty sock flavor that isn't really my thing.

I also have some others like an Ettan, Roda Lacket (sp?), Goda Rape (I know I have that spelled wrong) and a couple Generals (white portion, plain tobacco flavor, Sterk). As well as a few others I just got yesterday and haven't experienced enough to get a real opinion on.

What I have gathered is that I much prefer the Original to the White (that's assuming I'm correct in thinking Original has the extra bit of flavor outside the portion, like all the Offroads I mentioned). There's just something about putting in a fresh Original and getting that initial burst of flavor and then enjoying the lingering flavor over the next 30-75 minutes.

So, any recommendations? I do seem to like the savory over the sweet. Something tells me that if someone made a snus flavored like a nice smoked juicy ham I'd fall in love with it (but that may be TMI for my first post here). On the other hand, I'm down with trying something sweeter, so long as it's not sticky sweet.

Well, I don't want to wear out my welcome in my very first post, so if you don't mind let me wrap this up with two more quick questions:

    1. The PACT act I read about, will that affect my ability to get Offroad? (I'm in the US, btw).

    2. Northerner and Buysnus both seem to have the same general (lowercase 'g', not the snus brand) inventory. Are there places that sell more boutique type snus flavors? Sort of like custom cigars, or pipe tobacco sellers?

Thanks for any input. And I'll try not to be so long winded in future posts, but that is tricky for me

Welcome to SnusOn! I know I don't have many posts but I have been snusing for a couple of years. I just usually prefer to read as there are so many great members to the site already. Anywho..as you have already discovered I'm sure, there is a huge variety of flavors and portion types for real swedish snus but if you ever liked wintergreen dip you might want to try General Wintergreen. It has a flavor surprisingly close to the american varieties. As for some other flavored snuses Gote Rape No. 2 is a good one. Lingonberry flavor is what I taste the most but its not too sweet. Unfortunately that one only comes in a white. Do you like the regular tobacco flavors because I like many thought that I would prefer the flavored snuses when I first started, but ended up actually preferring the non-flavored. There is just so much complexity in the good ones they are hard to beat. Well I'm getting long winded too now

    1. The only site that I know of that has announced full compliance with PACT is The Northerner and V2, the company that makes Offroad, will still be available. So no worries there. You will just have to pay state taxes on it now and it will be shipped via UPS instead of USPS.

    2. Northerner and Buysnus carry everything. Occasionally new varieties become available such as Julesnus from V2 and Gotlands during the Christmas season.

Hope this helps congratulations on starting a new life w/ snus!

      Welcome to SnusOn!

Mrobin52 already covered some of it. I'll add that you should try all the snus you can. You never know what you'll end up liking, and there may be some surprises out there. Between Northerner and Buysnus, that's all that's available on the web market AFAIK. If they don't have it, no one else will.

I'm a huge fan of the Gotland line of snus. It's pretty unique, and worth a try. They tend to the bitter side, but I enjoy that characteristic.

        Welcome to Snuson ChancreSore

What other said, but more important, your tastes are gonna change anyways. Again. And again, and again, again, again. Sometimes complete flips. I was using just regulars for a year until one day, I couldn't tolerate them any more, and switched wholesale to whites.

Liking flavored snus almost always changes after a few months, just seems to for just about everyone. Me, I alternated between flavored and non flavored for 2 years until one day, I didn't almost ever want a flavored snus again.

For 2 1/2 years, I used no Swedish Match products, I posted here even that I liked none of Swedish match snus. ALL my snus was other companies. And then I lost retro, went on a 6 month journey to find a replacement routine, and last 3 months, ALL my regular rotation other than an occasional Thunder is Swedish Match

Tastes just keep changing. So try everything, and try everything again in 6 months, a yer, even again at 2 years, you will be shocked at what you start to like and not like. Just the way snus is.

          Thanks for the replies!

I will for sure try anything I can get my hands on. So far I've made three orders, about 10 can per order. Each time I've tried to order about 5 cans of whatever I think will fit my palate, and 5 cans of some more experimental flavors. I'll search the forums for it, but I just got a can of Taste of India Chaini Khaini that is, well, different. But I find I'm enjoying it and may become part of my regular order.

As for the original versus white, I wouldn't be surprised if that's partly because I'm only about 2 weeks off cigarettes (and I loved Marlboro reds but wished they were even stronger), so I'm pretty much not in the market for subtlety just yet. In fact the few times anymore that I get a nice good burn from a snus I relish it, because if it's anything like dip that will be pretty much gone before you know it. You know, kinda like when your kids grow up and leave the nest*.

After reading up on the Ice Tool thread I decided to get some los. And a couple portions just for good measure

1847 By Philip Morris Original 1 Pack
1847 By Philip Morris White 1 Pack
Icetool 3 ml Stainless steel 1 Pack
Swedish Match Tasting Kit LOOSE (8 cans)

The Swedish Match Tasting Kit has:

            General
            Probe
            Göteborgs Prima Fint
            Göteborgs Rapé
            Kronan
            Röda Lacket
            GrovSnus
            Ettan

I can't believe the Ice Tool cost about 40 bucks. Not that I'm complaining, it makes sense with what I understand is great build quality, on top of economies of scale. I almost went with the Prismaster since I don't even know if I'll like los. But hey, a job worth doing is worth doing right.
