New to snus and the forum

New to snus and really trying to find an alternative to smoking. I did some searches on the Internet and came across multiple reviews on YouTube and miscellaneous articles so I decided to give it a try. Now I'm not new to dipping, so I figured what the hell.

I started by buying a can of General Original portion and General Mint portion at a local tobacco shop. As soon as I tried the GOP I didn't like it right off the bat. Reminded me of the Copenhagen days and I don't care for that taste personally so I haven't used it much. The GMP was right up my alley though and it's my favorite by far.

Jumping head first into this, like I have a tendency to do, I placed an order for 6 cans of a variety of snus. This was suggested in this forum, so I figured what the heck. I began to really enjoy the mint so I figured I would check out Odens Extra Stark Licorice portion the next go around and the reviews seemed really good. That was the first mistake I made!

My order of various snus was being held up because 2 cans were out of stock. Desperate to have something to keep me going and get off cigs (also using e cig 510 too) I sent the site an email and requested the ENTIRE order be changed to Odens Extra Stark Licorice portion. I anxiously waited for it to arrive and it did today.

I opened the can and caught a faint smell of licorice, but nothing that screamed of the flavor. I figured it would taste better in my mouth so I popped one in. Almost immediately I felt sick as the juice hit my throat. I swallowed some water to help it out and it passed. While I'm enjoying the nice little buzz, I have to say that I'm extremely disappointed in the lack of flavor of this portion.

Now I have 6 cans of something that I could care less if I had it or not and don't know what to do. So now come the questions. Should I just spend some more time with this flavor and see how it plays out or move on to another one? Clearly I don't care for the heavy dip taste and need something that has an enjoyable flavor. Assuming I'm allowed to partake, I'll likely trade the remaining 5 cans that I just vac packed for something more to my liking. Any suggestions?

I'm at a loss here. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Welcome to SnusOn Carlito. And to snus. I find it odd that you pick up a dip taste from both General and Odens Licorice, but to each his own. Personally, I feel you and I would be bummed on a stash consisting exclusively of licorice snus myself. I think you're entry in the trade forum is a fine solution, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it takes a while to get a good reply. After a few years around here I wouldn't say that Licorice snus is most people's bag... I can think of two who like Gotlands and/or Offroad but they don't like portions much and don't like the strong stuff. So... I would recommend placing a small order for some minty snus as you say you're interested in, and some non-flavored like Grov, Ettan, and see if you keep getting the "dip taste". And keep a can of the Licorice to try every once in a while. I've had it once and I don't care for it either, so it's certainly not guaranteed you will come to like it someday. Again welcome to the forum and to snus.

If you like mint, you should try out a mint order. My first order was a mix between mint and regular portions. My first snus experience was with Ettan and I didn't love it at all. I wanted something sweeter. So i placed a large mint/ wintergreen order (see below) and found a few that I enjoyed. Now that I've grown used to the snus experience I enjoy regular tobacco flavor quite a bit and find myself using regular tobacco flavor snus most often, with an ocassional mint, wintergreen and Anis portion from time to time.

When you first start using snus your throat will burn a bit just because it's not used to the drip at all. I suggest always having something to drink when you're snusing in the beginning.

I've found my balance and everyone will eventually. My go to snus is Lab series 01. & 02. I use General Mint, Gotland Grey Anis (a cheap licorice), and Offroad wintergreen (for a cheap wintergreen)

I'm still trying different snus though looking for cheaper snus that will replace some of my more expensive loves (general mint, and 01) Currently about to try jak mint, and grovsnus white as they're a bit cheaper....

Offroad Frosted, Portion - 2 pcs.
Offroad Wintergreen, Portion - 2 pcs.
Thunder Frosted ES, Mini Portion - 2 pcs.
Jakobssons Wintergreen, Strong Portion - 2 pcs.
General Mint, White Portion (US) - 1 pcs.
Catch Pure Mint, White Medium Portion - 1 pcs.

one of the best places to look imo being fairly new to Swedish snus myself is check out blog revues and youtube videos .. they usually tell the strength, portion size, and flavor.

Thank you for all the replies! This forum is great! I already have a trade in place for some minty portions of Frosted and Jacks so I feel good now. I don't know what it is about that dip type taste, but I pick up on it pretty easily. Like I said, the General Mint portion is great, so I think I'll be sticking with mint for a little while.

Thanks for all the suggestions too. I'll be trying a can or two of something new every time I order and nothing goes to waste, even if I don't like the flavor.

I did check out the reviews on the Odens Extra Stark Licorice and that's why I bought it, but boy was I wrong. lol I really appreciate the warm welcome folks.

Hate to say it but good reviews of snus, on this or any other forum, mean exactly jack-squat to any given individual. Individual being the key word. Your tastes are no one else's tastes--not even a whole bunch of someone else's. There is plenty out there that will engage your taste buds in a satisfactory manner so trying out a lot of different versions is always a good idea--if you can afford it--and you will eventually find what works for you. I or even a hundred others here can swear that a given snus is the best thing ever invented by man but that's no guarantee you'll like it.

I agree! Unfortunately in the skeem of things, we do tend to take someone's opinion if that opinion is supported by others, at least in so far as trying something out anyway. My problem was I put all my eggs in one basket when I should have just tried it first. Lesson learned!

You can test this theory by looking for good reviews of Kronan

You just have to do it your way...Carlito's Way....

Try everything you can. Your favorite snus might be the one you never tried.

Off the bat I would say give something from the Jacobson series a try as well as Thunder Frosted.

Goteborgs #1 will taste like gin. Kronan like Earl Grey Tea (or dill picles...........depending on who you ask). I love Phantom Blue and Brown los but I am not sure how they are in portions. Roda is nice. Probe tastes like Levi Garrett Chewing Tobacco

Granit, Knox, and Nick/Johnny, Onyx will all share the similar taste profile to General. That does not mean that you will not like them or that they will remind you of dip in the way that general did (it just means that you might want to try those at some point in the future).

I would also hold off on Skruf, Grov, Ettan, and Prima but you will eventually want to try them (these are all more or less straight tobacco flavors-- the skruf has a slight hint of Rose in it which is very good) .

Odens Kanel has a mild undertone of cinnamon

Anyway........................... welcome to the forum mate........................just enjoy the ride...............try a variety..................if you don't like something (provided you don't have 6 cans of it) stick in the freezer and revisit it in a few months. Your taste will change

If you're a fan of mint-flavored portion snus, I'd recommend:

                            Thunder Frosted Portion
                            Jakobsson's Strong Mint Portion
                            Catch Eucalyptus White Poriton
General Mint White Portion (I see you've already tried it)
                            Catch Pure Mint

There are numerous mint and wintergreen flavored snus' to choose from. Good luck finding your favorite.

I don't see how you wouldn't like Thunder Frosted.
The good thing about Thunder Frosted is they come in 16mg 12mg and 8mg (minis) and it tastes great. I'm not a big fan of other Thunder or V2 products but Frosted is just amazing. They've really nailed this one big time.
I'd say that if the 17mg Odens was too strong - go to the 12mg long +. The long is a different shaped bag portion that is longer and thinner which I think is more discreet as well.

I'll also point out that if you go to www.odenssnus.com they're doing a similar product and they call it Odens Cold. I think they're doing that in just a 9mg and a whopping 22mg at the moment. Their website is brand new so if they're out of stock now they'll have it in stock in the near future.
