No Problem! Also, I seem to get waaay better shaves out of the 1950's flare-tip SuperSpeeds than any other razor. The seem to be the perfect blend of aggressiveness and wont-slice-the-hell-out-of-your-scalp-ness. I have a '56 and a '57, and they are by far my favorite head shavers.
And, check around your local antique stores, you can usually find good DE shavers in abundance at those shops. But before you do, just look through the B&B forums I told you about, and get a good feel for what "good condition" is, and how much you should pay.
How long would each side of the razor last? I suppose you'd only use one side once.
Nice Pick! The DE89 is well regarded in the shaving world. If you are trying to save some cash try an antique store. I got my first DE razor for about $10.00 at an antique store and it's still my favorite! I have an extra tech I would send you for free but I have a feeling the postage may be a bit much.
Also, be willing to try different blades. The Derby's are my absolute favorite and last me a week easily but everybody is different. I went to the B&B forum and got this huge sampler with well over 100 blades in it for less than $10.00 with shipping. Be patient and try to use each blade for at least 2 to 3 shaves as some start off great but get dull quickly.

This is just great advice lads. It's a whole new world I'm getting into here.
Admittedly I missed over the whole DE thread whilst it was going on because it didn't concern me then, but I think I'll have a look now.
Are these pretty safe on your head - because I totally hate nicks - not because it hurts but because it looks like sh*t.
That razor will work great, though I prefer the TTO models.(twist to open). And, like Vegan I waaaay prefer vintage models. Seems like the artform has been lost on all the new models - they just dont give as nice of a shave.
And I also agree with Vegan that Derby's are a damn fine blade. A derby blade lasts me a good 7-8 headshaves. And to answer your question, you use both sides every shave. When the first side fills with hair/lather, you flip it over to the clean side. Just keeps you from having to rinse it as much. Any of the shaving forums have tons of info on these shaving methods and equipment, just do some reading.

Thats why I love Derby blades, you get a nice close shave with no nicks. Feather blades are the sharpest blades there is, but those damn things will surgically slice every bump/zit/anything else you have on your head. I only use Feathers occasionally, for that reason.
Though you will get a few nicks at first, until you get your technique down. Do alot of research on the proper way to shave with one, as you cant just go hog wild running the blade over your skin like a cartridge razor or youll look like you got in a fight with Freddy Kruger. You have to actually pay attention to what you are doing - but its well worth it.
Frosted, BUY THIS!! Its not gonna last but minutes I'm sure. A Flare Tip SuperSpeed AND a Omega brush for $17?? GREAT deal right there! But you need to create an account at B&B and send him a PM right away. And by the way, I have bought from him before, so I can vouch for him, great seller.
I think I want to score a Gillette Khaki Set next. I have seen them go for around $20.00 to $30 on ebay and it might be a fun razor to try. Here is a link to one for sale on ebay. I was going to bid on it but it looks like the handle is cracked in one of the photos.
I've got hair that grows like mad. I shave my head daily and can vouch for the Mach3. When I started shaving it I used the Venus which is just the ladies' version but it's got a pad all the way around it so you can' pretty much bang it on your head with no worries. I have psoriasis and though you can't see it there's often bumps all be it small ones that I'm afraid to hit with a DE. I've got the Mach3 shave down in about 90 seconds clean as a whistle. I get the shadow in the evening when the blades get dull but with good cream I get them to last over 20 shaves and that's my head and my face.
That's interesting Wicked - I've heard that the mach 3 can be quite harsh. I certainly don't need harsh but I'm inclined to try this before I start buying a DE - because all totalled up, including barbicide, comes to a pretty penny.
It's dead good looking at all the DE shavers though and I'm extremely tempted to put my hand in my wallet.
