We started out with 10 hens and a rooster..........dominiques. Once you've enjoyed fresh eggs you'll have no use for store bought. They're pretty easy to care for and relaxing to watch. My wife's pretty much made a hobby of them and every one has a name. They come to her to be petted like she's cindarella or something. Cleaning the coop is a chore. Be sure to put a metal "drip pan" under their roosting area. We've lost two hens, one "cause unknown" and the other broke her leg in a panic over my 4th of July home fireworks show. We havn't lost any to predators yet but I build a tight coop and have chicken wire laid over the top of the run alongside the vertical fence to discourage hawks. My wife saw a hawk dive the yard once and he wheeled back up when he took notice of the wire. You might want to check out this web site for specifics on how many square feet you'll need per bird; http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/index.php
