Those people are crazy. I hear the woman...she must be the high priestess or something on the radio every now and again. I marvel at their devotion to this lunacy but I don't think I could withhold violence if they showed up at a funeral I was at.

That is the message that gets filtered out. I have encountered these horrible people on several occasions over the past few years, but most people just think they are an anti-military group. Even local medias portray them as such. As soon as you tell people the "god's wrath" BS they spew, people are confused and can't see why such wakos get so much media coverage.

On the flip side, the Gathering of Eagles claims to protect families from Fred Phelps' group, but are just as vile and ugly.

On a side note. . .There is a bit in the movie Bruno with their group that, to me, made the whole movie worth watching

It is amazing and I have the "privilege" of seeing these whacks up close frequently. The urge to pop the bird going past them is hard to resist but a tactic they use on their home ground is always to have kids with them so passersby will be inhibited from getting too nasty. These creepoids give the scum of the earth a bad name.

Yea they had kids with them when they came down to my state. They where cordoned off from the counter protesters but people as the WBBC came walking in just descended on them blasting away on the vuvuzelas and holding their own signs and singing/chanting. One guy sat down within 10 feet of them and started blasting away on a didgeridoo. I thought that was funny as heck. They where outnumbered like 10 to one at least there was like 150 to 200 counter protesters. At one point everyone surrounded them and held their signs higher so that no one could even see them.

I will say this though as much as I hate their message I support their right to say the things they do. The more they say the more people see them for what they really are and any message they have is mitigated by their own actions and people who come out and put them in their place. I really feel sorry for their kids though. Having such a hate filled world view forced on them and such.
Someday somewhere they will step on someones toes that will not hesitate to try and kill them. Its only a matter of time.

As far as the media coverage goes, only one station here actually covered them. The rest focused on the soldier's death. Which is the best way to take the power from those types of people. It's also why I was hesitant in doing this thread, because they don't deserve acknowledgement. But I thought it was something people should be aware of, should they ever hear they are coming to their city or a funeral of a loved one.

I'll have to try to find that Bruno clip. There is a respectable group, called the Patriot Guard, that attempts to shield the families from these zealots. They ride in, usually about 100 deep, on Harley-Davidsons, and waving American Flags. They try to create a wall of flags so that the protestors are no longer visible.

This group is very disrespectful for families with soldiers that have passed away or any family that has lost a loved one. I know there are groups that do not support the war in the Middle East but we as Americans need to be supportive to those soldiers who are over there right now. Those who protest a soldier’s funeral need to be tried for treason! As a Christian, I do not support gays but I don’t care who they are or what they do, that is their decision and I don’t look at them any differently then I would as a normal person. If I had a funeral of a friend who was gay or in the armed forces and they came along, I would not be able to contain myself. This group is a menace to the society, full of pathetic losers.

In my state they have this group called the patriot rider or the patriot guard. They are a bunch of biker dudes that attend funerals of fallen soldiers so that if these wackos show up they can kick their ass (and they do).

The disrespect of some people. These wacko's are our equivalent of extremist muslims, they praise the deaths of people who are different than them just for the sole reason that they are different than them. I agree 1st ammendment applies to nutjobs as well, but the police better GTFO of the way if these people show up to a funeral that i'm at. There is nothing more disrespectfull than protesting at a funeral. It's not the time, nor the place.

They protested my college graduation, live too close to them and you see them too much.

I'm surprised this group didn't get "disposed" of properly by now

There are a few, but only a few, examples of people who have managed to turn the tables on the odious Phelps family and their cultist followers (I won't even dignify them by referring to them as a church). As I recall, there was an establishment -- I believe it was a restaurant, if memory serves -- that pledged a hefty donation to AIDS charities for every hour the ranting bigots continued their protest outside their doors, and got plenty of good press for their pledge. The Phelps gang did show up and protest for a couple hours, but packed up and left once they realized what was going on.

I'm sure they will! One of the members "Sam" is an illegitimate child, something they don't like to admit.

Very clever! That's something a lot of places should consider. The charity amount just continues to climb the longer these hill-apes protest. Like a taxi meter!

I think violence solves every problem, it's just a question of degree. If they got their asses beaten a few times while protesting, I think that would curb their obnoxious behavior.
