DE/straight shavers?

The funny thing about a DE is that if I take one pass WTG, it's still closer than ANY shave I got with a cartridge razor. I just can't "accept" one pass shaving anymore, because I know that I can get it much closer with one or two more passes XTG and ATG.

I shaved one side of my face normally with my DE, and the other with a new Gillette Sensor Excel. Taking only one pass with each razor...WTG. The DE side was ridiculously closer, lol. Before my DE I used to only shave with one pass, it took like 40 seconds to do it too, how funny how things change.

Just make sure you use your wifes belt to do that. You don't want to cut your own.

I've had hard time figuring out the straight razor and I've had a few shaves with it now..

I still can't bring myself to try and use it, lol. I'm going to wait until Friday night to shave with it, so that when the bloodletting begins, I'll have time to heal up over the weekned.

Probably be a good idea to avoid the groin are until you really get the hang of handling a straight.

I remember my grandfather too shaving with one of these....

He had such a thick beard ... One thing that I remember is that he took his time when shaving ... sometimes he would sit like an hour in the garden and shaving... the prep work was like 20 - 30 minutes, lol

Okay, I've determined that my straight is NOT sharp enough, lol. It will shave arm hair like butter, but it doesn't pass the "hanging hair" test at all. I'll re-hone it this weekend on a better set of stones. The ones I have aren't wide enough, so I'll head out to my father's shop to do it. He's got everything.

I did try a few passes with it, and it pulled like hell. So I tried to take a more shallow angle...no dice. I really would like to be able to shave with this thing but don't want to pay someone else to hone the damned thing, but I may end up having to do it.

Most hones aren't "wide enough" to fit the whole blade at once, unless you drop some serious dough. There are certain techniques to honing straights(half-stroke, x-stroke, rolling-x, swaying-x, etc etc), depending on the type of blade/hollow grind. Unless you know how, you'll just be fighting yourself, wondering why the hell the thing wont get to "shave-ready", no matter how many stones you use or how many times you run it across the hone.

Also - the "hanging hair" test is a myth. I have honed razors that before I was done with them would pass the "test", but shave like crap. I have also honed razors that will not pass the "test", but shave like absolute butter.

My go-to straight is a 113 year old Sperry & Alexander, and it will not pass the "hanging hair test", but the damn thing just melts the hair off my face, and shaves better than any other of the many, many straights I possess at any given time.

Yeah I know, but I wanted to do this myself (when I had time), but now I won't have time for awhile, lol. Go figure....how about a barter deal on a hone ? I've already polished and buffed out the blemishes on the blade and it looks good. The scales don't look bad all so nothing needed there, what do you say?
