County Courthouse will be getting new Obama picture

For the last month, a 4-by-6-inch photo of President Barack Obama smoking a cigarette has been hanging in the Adams County Courthouse meeting room. The photo hung over the plaque clearly labeled “President of the United States,” next to an 8-by-10 portrait of Gov. Dave Heineman. Only within the last three days has the presidential photo come down at the request of a county official who Supervisor Eldon Orthmann said found it disrespectful. “I have no problem with that,” said Orthmann, who matted and hung the photo. “I’m not upset about it, because it was only going to be there for a short time anyhow.”
Orthmann said he found the photo while visiting the Holdrege Daily Citizen newspaper.
“I thought it was kind of appropriate because we had just discussed possibly making a no-smoking county campus,” he said. “And here was the president, who I’m aware does smoke, in a picture with a cigarette in his mouth.”
