Character assassination of Lincoln does not bother you? Defaming a great American bothers me. And, of all things, concerning slavery. I am sure texasmade has done something as significant as save the disintegration of a country. Got any slanderous lies to tell about Washington?
If you still identify yourself as a Southerner, and not an American, you are a sad excuse for a patriot.
It is crap like this that ruins this list. There are people reading these blatant lies in other countries. They may be left with the impression that these numskulls actually know what the hell they are talking about. If I were reading from abroad, I would wonder how we made it this far.
Until I joined this list, I was unaware of just how many fellow citizens I do not like. There seems to be an endless assortment of immature, disaffected, whiny, dangerously deluded shit-bags calling themselves Americans.

well my memory has these moments....but im leaving this thread alone, haven't read it from front to end, how lincoln pertains to global warming i will never know. I'll see where this ends up 14 pages down the road.

no offense to anybody, after the gun law shit storm thread I'm not to keen on participating in "might turn to flame war" threads.

          EDIT:
"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica." - Abraham Lincoln

might of meant something different back then...actually had a random list of quotes in a notepad on the desktop to read through and add to when I et bored, but nuff said, you can find me momma birding a pris to daruckis half naked on the hood of the car after 4 red bulls and a bottle of jager..

Lincoln was a farmer, lawyer, and statesman. He endured an extremely difficult youth full of loss and sickness. I highly doubt he ever smoked significant amounts of marijuana. However, it was "legal" then and readily available as medicine, or just as a wild herb, so there's a good chance he did smoke it at some point...

Jefferson on the other hand was an intriguing fellow. Probably the most cultured and open minded president this country has ever seen. Hell, he may have even impregnated a slave, similar to Washington. But this was of course a completely different time and environment compared to Lincoln's day.

Cool quote!!! Snusify should appreciate that one.

Any way you cut it, politicians of today are hollow and selfish compared to the many great minds that held office in the first century of our grand experiment.

Calm down man lol. Please don't take anything discussed on this forum to seriouse. I don't think anyones intentions were to commit character assasination (no pun intended) on old honest Abe, we were just talking about how politicians tend to rise on the back of popular movements in order to get them what they want. In this case, the point was being made that politicians never gave a shit about the environment, but now see the oppertunity to use this new green movement to accomplish their goals.

I think most people would agree that Abe was not a bad president, infact he is one of the most famous. And in my years living in the south I have realized that yes people who are still convinced the south will rise again need to get over it lol.

                  And for the record:

I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And in as much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.

                  -Abraham Lincoln

                  (that just happened)

Was just saying that while freeing the slaves helped his cause, and he does get credit for doing it, it was not because he was a champion for civil rights or anything.

And in reality, he only freed the Southern slaves to hurt the states wishing to seceed.

The slaves in the United States of America were freed by the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The 13th Amendment was not passed until after President Lincoln's death.

The Emancipation Proclamation was a political device intended to prevent Britain (and France) from being able to recognise the Confederacy.

The Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in states that were hostile to the Union Government (the Confederate States). The Proclamation did not address the slaves that were still held in the Union States. So to say Lincoln started a war to free the slaves really couldn't be further from the truth, he did it to hurt the southern states which is why slavery remained in the north. However, the EP was siezed on by abolitionists which eventually led to the end of slavery.

I have read that quote is a fabrication.

But freed slaves at that time, is not the same as established citizen blacks of today. So even if it's a true quote, based on context, it's not so shocking. The captured and used slaves where uneducated, uncivilized peoples simply bought and brought, to do menial labor.

No it is certainly real. It was his rebuttal to Douglas during a debate, and you can check my source I listed for the full content and context of the debate.

The reality is that Lincoln came in wanting to stop slavery from spreading, as opposed to abolishing it, but in the end he did Abolish it and therefore he will go down as one of the greatest president's in history, even though it caused the bloodiest war. It was necessary. Slavery has/had no place in America.
Regardless of the fact that, imo, he freed the slaves as part of a broader political agenda against the southern states (who favored states rights over a strong central government), the point is he did it and that's all that matters.

                        Lots of snow here aswell.

Usually there's not much snow and by the end of february everythings melted. Actually it's usually kind of melty most of the winter.

But this year is freezing. There was like -20 celsius at night yesterday
