    AVATAR

Has anyone else seen this movie?

I went to see it this weekend and it blew my mind. It was an artistic masterpiece to say the least and had a great storyline. Very pro-environmental but excelent story. The new 3d camera they developed for it will surely be industry standard (hoepfully) from now on.

For those of you who havn't seen it, go watch ti in the theatres, it's amazing. It's got blue aliens, kick ass human operated mech robots, flying, sex, and the 3d is amazing.

I'm reluctant to go see it, and let me explain why:

For some reason, people get this idea that a movie doesn't need an appealing plot to be watchable. So here comes Avatar, with really nice effects and action and whatnot, and the reviewers love it. They all say : "Well, the plot was a bit weak, but man, the rest of the movie rocked".

Other side of the medal: Artsy movies. Those usually have a pretty intricate plot with in-depth characterization, but there's little or no effect, nothing to wow the audience. And reviewers love them. They'll say: "Well, it was a bit boring at times, but man, the plot was really good".

For me, both those kinds of movies are, in fact, poor. A really good movie has to combine both elements. Good plot, good entertainment. The poster-child of those REALLY good movies would be Fight Club.

But really, the worst thing about the avatar plot, and this is found in many movies today, is that it's very anti-human. I don't quite know why, but many movies have recently been toting the same "Humans are evil, aliens are good" line, along with the "Technology is evil, living like a savage is good" thing too. Both of those I strongly disagree with. While there ARE some evil people out there and there IS some dubious technology, I believe that, on the whole, people want to do the right thing, however misguided they may be. And technology has helped us tremendously. We can't even begin to imagine what life would be like without electricity, warm water and whatnot.

So yeah, I think I'll pass on Avatar, 3D or not.

I saw it. I loved the story, and clearly it was anti-greed and against the tendency to dismiss others because they are different, and inconvenient. I've been rereading Watership Down, and a rabbit makes the comment that the humans didn't kill them because they hated them, but because they were simply in the way. "They killed us to suit themselves." I would say the message in Avatar is anti-dehumanization, if anything. But that's just my take.

And, yeah, the FX and the 3D and all the rest were awesome. I'd call this movie a crowning achievement and I want to see it again.

i get so sick of people talking about how cool transformers is because of the special effects. WHO GIVES A SHIT? IT HAS ANTHONY ANDERSON AS A HACKER AND A PART WHERE THE ****ING AUTOBOTS ARE HIDING FROM THE KIDS PARENTS AND THE WHOLE THING WAS A BORING PIECE OF SHIT! **** that movie.

and i agree, fight club is a fantastic example of the best of both worlds.

No i'm the same way. I hate cgi fests and lack of plot, and i really hate environmental humans are evil style plots.

But the being said, I thought the plot was good and the story was good as well. I am just like you and I went with my wife to this movie expecting to not like it but I gotta say it was excellent.

Yah I hate transformers, or any movie that puts more emphasis on the special effects than a cool story. Really though I didn't feel this movie was that way. A little bit predictable but I think they did a good job.

Also, fight club was a piece of American history. One of those movies you can watch 5 times and see something new every time.

Also guys, having an infant daughter, it's a rare occasion I get to see a movie, so that may play into this lol.

the whole anti- human, Humans are bad theme is getting a bit tiresome. When I watched wall-e i thought this flick is cool but why does it have to be so anti human, same thing with when the earth stood still, I mean I go to the movies to be entertained not to be preached at subliminally........ Oh nd I love fight club, or the big lebowski, watched a movie on cable the other night called red belt great movie see it if you can.

Yah all of Hollywood is very leftist so they always manage to add in sermons about how Human's are a virus to the planet and we are the biggest evil there is. The anti-human thing has just got that much more steam now that the AGW thing is back again haunting politics. Did anyone see the soviet style poster art at Copenhagen that showed mock movie posters where the humans were the evil gozilla killing poor animals and we were the evil monster killing teranchula's and shit? I mean yes we should be more in tune with nature this anti-human thing from the left has been going to far. It could turn into a cult like mentality more than it already has.

I saw the movie on the first weekend it came out.
I wasn't really thrilled with the plot - but the effects were outstanding...

It will become one in my collection, except I'll wait for the directors cut.....

So for those of you with you young kids, here's how to get the best value out of kids movies....

Buy the toys early - this way your kids get to play with the characters from the movies and bond with them first. One that's done......THEN take them to see the movie. They'll be blown away - all of a sudden, here are the very same toys they've already been playing with, with lives of their own.....on the big screen!

I discovered this accidentally when Toy Story came out originally - it had been out in the US for a while before it reached the Uk, but the toys had been available for a while. The kids loved the toys, but had no idea they were spinoff merchandising from a movie.....until they got to the theatre....

jeeze, i saw it on the web twice, i'm gonna see it at the theater in 3-D. that shit is awesome.

edit - concerning what's been posted about the "anti-human" stuff, and considering the babies that have been mentioned in this thread, let's face it. we are totally ruining the world for our children. you can run, but you can't hide.

                              A little late but.
I swore I would never go back into a theater ever again after a couple of bad experiences with loud f#$@kin people but went because of the new 3d. As a graphic designer I thought this movie was visually like brain candy but the plot very predictable and similar to Dances with Wolves. I can see where the anti-human thoughts come but in my eyes it seemed to message that humans are straying further away from the natural world. Even though our technology has advanced us into a more comfortable world I it will eventually advance us right out of this world.

Definately would recommend it to everyone even if I was the last one who saw it.

The weird thing is I just saw Surrogates with Bruce in the same week and this whole concept of switiching your conscience to another body is bugging me. I am not a practicing Christian but it just seems very unnatural to move towards that.
