Give A Hoot. Read A Book!

So we have a movie and games thread, what do snuser's read?

my personal favs. are in no particular order:

The Neverending Story - Michael Ende. The movie only went through the first half of the book

House Of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski The most f&#$ed up book ever.

The Catcher In The Rye - J. D. Salinger. A classic.

The Dark Tower Series - Stephen King. When he was hit by the van, I saw the tower falling. Almost everything he has wrote leads to the Dark Tower.

The People's History Of The United States Of America - Howard Zinn. This one will just piss you off.

Yeah man! The Dark Tower series was amazing. I'm a sucker for Stephen King. Also love Tom Robbins books. Currently reading Crime and Punishment. I usually like non-fiction though -- anthropology (esp Marvin Harris old school cultural relativity stuff), religious studies books, linguistics, things I can learn from. Reading is good.

Still Life With Woodpeckers (Tom Robbins) was awesome. His writing is so different from everything else.

I haven't read in quite awhile. I used to read a ton, but got out of it. Now I read tech sites and forums. Here's a few of my favorite authors...

        JD Salinger
        Mark Twain
        Edgar Allen Poe
        Morgan LLewellyn(sp?)
Langston Hughes(just about the only poetry I read other than Poe)
        F Scott Fitzgerald
        Jack Kerouac

... and a couple books in particular

        Will- G Gordon Liddy
        Ben Franklin Autobiography
        Siddhartha- Herman Hesse
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance- Don't remember the author

Did you guys read the Harry Potter series? I have a little story that goes along with it. Back when the first movie was coming out I was working at Wal-Mart in the toy department. Well I had shorter hair then, so Wal-Mart made me dress up as Harry Potter. (sadly I kinda look like him) I had never read the books, so I was wingin' it. This little girl came up to me and said "your not Harry Potter". I told her I was. Back and forth it went. She asked me where was Herminone. I told her he was sick. That little girl ripped me a new one! So out of spite of some little girl I started reading the series. I was at the midnight sale of books 5-7. It's a great read, and gets very dark.
The next time WalMart made me dress up as Harry, I saw that little girl. She said I wasn't Harry Potter, and I said I was. We gave each other that knowing smile. Thank God I don't still work for Wal-Mart.

Side note, when I went on break that day, I went outside to smoke a cig. Talk about some nasty looks from parents!

wow before i had even read your entire post, id already planned to mention much of what you did. first off, i LOVE harry potter dude. love it. second, house of leaves. best book ever written. and the dark tower. im currently on book 3, because i havent been reading at all lately, but i burned through the first 2 a month ago or so. i have all of them except song of susannah now, so ill be reading this series for a long time.

other books im into: anything by neil gaiman. i love neil, ive read every volume of the sandman, mr punch, the graveyard book, coraline, and good omens. good omens is probably my fave. ive been collecting comic books since i was like 12 years old, ive slowed down on it big time, but now i dont have money to throw at expensive 15 page books, so i only get the trade paperbacks and graphic novels. some of my faves: sandman (the greatest story ever told in any medium) bone by jeff smith, the exterminators (was awesome until they cut the series short and the writer had to rush the ending) just about anything batman or green arrow, watchmen of course, identity crisis, any of the crises really.

Your going to enjoy The Dark Tower. Especially if your a Stephen King fan. I really enjoyed IT. That book scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. But it is tied to the Dark Tower series.

I never got into Stephen King. Harry Potter was okay, up until the last one. For me, I felt like she just culled the entire plot of it from fan fics. They're not exactly going to be known as the literary achievements of the century, but they were decent light reads, and I felt like she phoned it in on the last one.

At the moment, I'm reading the complete fiction of Jorge Luis Borges. Some very good short stories.

                            Right here.

His first seven novels are among the best. Not a howdy-dowdy literary snob, but lots of roll on the floor gut busting humor. With lots of off the wall insight into the human condition.

Need we even mention J.R. Tolkien.
John Irving, A prayer for Owen Meany, Cider House Rules, etc.
