Usually Sweden, Norway, and Iceland trade positions in UN tables for which is the best country to live in. It depends on who draws up the chart which countries are where, but we usually don't do too well. I feel like we're stubbornly trying to keep on going along with a system we know is broke, and making only superficials attempts at change. With corporations as far into politics as they are, I don't see much of a way to get a change except a big crash. Sooner or later, we're either going to wind up in the slums, or something drastic will have to happen.

France, and most other European countries did have to change to get to where they are today, but I'd just like to see the US try to learn from the success and failure of other nations to better itself. As it is, I plan on escaping to somewhere else for at least a few years. Either I'll love it and stay, or I'll come to appreciate how things are here more. Either way works out well for me.

HOWEVER. It depends on how you look at it. We do have outstanding preventative care in the US, but we're ranked low because we don't distribute it fairly to all citizens. The WHO ranks "best for most" less than "mediocre for all".

So on the one hand, we're great due to our innovation and application, but poor due to our inability to give it to everyone.

Some people would therefore disagree with our rank and France's rank, and I can't blame them for that. It's a matter of perception in the end.

I actually had an opportunity to move to Stockholm, and I still may...I've given it some serious thought. 1) I'd be out of the realm of PACT and free to use the best freaking snus on the planet, and 2) I'd get to try out other governments for myself!

If I can find myself a job in Götesberg, I'm planning on applying to the university there. It'd be a free education from one of the top schools in Europe, and I think I'd have enough time over the four years it'l take to finish undergrad, and do my Masters that I'll know whether or not I want to say. One thing my Norwegian teacher Liv said to me that's kind of discouraging is that Norwegians and Swedes in general don't really just strike up conversations with anyone. She said that she doesn't recall ever speaking to the people who lived next to her in her apartement building, except the odd hello in the hall. She lived in Oslo until she moved to NY, so it looks like finding people to hang out with may be a bit difficult.

She had one much more humourous story about the same sort of thing. Her friend from the US went over to Oslo for business, or something, and he was sitting at a bar. He ordered his drink, and started freaking out because nobody would talk to him, not ever the bartender. So he callled her up in tears thinking he had done something wrong and offended everyone, and she had to tell him that Norwegians just tend to keep to themselves.

WE should have shown him the movies hostile first, and then let him go into that bar he would have really freaked out!!

I got at friday even more proof that some of you americans have totally missed their schooldays. My friend spent whole summer in USA (visited seattle, new york and many other places) once his relatives friend asked where are you from, my friend answered "Finland". "Oh, where in America is it?" =DDD And he REALLY believed when my friend told him that we live in caves.

And yeah, if somebody of you are going to move to Sweden/Norway etc. you're going to love it, free healthcare etc. If you don't got a job you get nice amount of money with what you can live (about 1000 euros) pretty nicely alone. But stuff aint the cheapest here. But guys, if you move to Sweden, don't go to Malmö lol. :P

I don't know what's up with Malmö, but I was aware that stuff is quite expensive. Still, those taxes are how all that wonderful free stuff is paid for, and it's cheaper than living in Norway. I don't think I'd get that €1000 a month though, every site I've looked at so far states I need to prove I'll be coming with enough money to support myself or have a good job. I figure if I go to university there, I could work in a hotel or some other touristy industry until I have a solid grip on Swedish, and then look at other jobs.

Apparently I'm the only person interested in learning Finnish, though. I heard about the grammar and it sounded so different that I decided I wante to learn it. Then again, I've heard a lot of people joke that Finnish might go extinct because the Finns learn English so they don't have to speak a language as complicated as Finnish. Still, the whole system intrigues me, as does the ability to make those imposing looking, super-long words that show up all the time.

For neanderthals with guns we sure have accomplished a lot. lots of anti-americanism on this forum lately. We aint perfect but we also have helped hurting countries more than anyone else. And why liberals make guns out to be some evil thing I will never understand.

We have certainly accomplished quite a lot, while at the same time REALLY screwing some big shit up. I don't think it's so much anti-americanism, so much as it's anti-american gov't. Honestly I don't have a problem with guns, I actually rather enjoy the things. I consider myself pretty liberal, and I also don't understand the bitch with guns.

I remember reading something several years back about some town in the states that made it a requirement for everyone that lived there to also own a gun. The crime rate dropped like a stone.

I started this thread with the purpose of getting my angst out about the bullshit education system we have here, which seems, from my experience, to push out the largest number of sub-par individuals of any system in the world. In the process it has evolved into a very interesting conversation, with some humor mixed in as well. So far it seems to be working.

I know there's some europeans here. How many of those europeans find that american tourists are among the dumbest people to walk the earth?

I live out here on the outskirts of the country (hawaii) and I prefer to deal with the japanese, scottish, german, and russian tourists more than the ones from the mainland, they're friendly and polite (most of them speak better english too). The american tourists come here thinking they're owed something, like they have a golden spoon lodged in their ass, they don't tip worth shit, and they treat EVERYONE like dirt while trying to rake discounts out of everything they do.

My opinion on this is that americans as a whole, need to stop treating their own countrymen like shit all the time, improve the quality of life for the less fortunate here and stop spending all the money of 3rd world countries that got themselves into the mess they're in. We had our revolution when we got sick of the shit. Let them hold their own if they don't like their gov't. That's what every other sovereign nation in the world had to do till we came along.

The other problem of "helping" countries, is we only help the ones that have something we want, or some other strategic purpose (I'm still working out the details on why we help isreal, I mean they're the root cause of the shit in the middle east). What about the shit going on in Sudan? How many people in the US even really know what's going on over there? They don't sit on a mass of oil so we don't even hear about it in the news.

That was slightly off topic, but all still very much related to the quality of education in the US.

In America, if your parents are rich, you will go to college, even if your IQ level is 87. Since America's College system is privatized, only the offspring of the rich will have the privilege of higher education. Its just another way of dividing the lower from the upper class.

In France, College is almost free. Taxation pays for everyone to enter college, regardless of social or economic class. Hopefully, one day, America will wake up and realize that privatized education is inefficient and downright wrong.

Do you actually believe the drivel you spew, or is it just an excuse for why you did not put in the effort to go to school. Do a stint in the military and the GI bill will pay for anyone to go to school. Do not put blatant lies on here to sooth your troubled mind and support your bleeding heart agenda. Some of the non-US citizens might actually think you know what you are talking about. Poor trodden upon little you.

Actually, Kevin, I got straight A's in school. I graduated with a 3.8 GPA, so don't try to patronize me. I cannot afford school, even though I work a full-time job. Even though the prospects of pursuing a higher education is something I find desirable, I don't feel like drowning in debt, which is something most people don't think about.

As with myself spreading false information, I couldn't disagree with you more. The current privatized college educational system in America is a failure. Working class citizens cannot afford college, while rich, well-to-do kids are sent off to college, not having to worry about any kind of financial consequences, thanks to their parent's paychecks.

With your regards to joining the military, I will pass on that. While I support the troops who serve my country, I don't support the corrupt politicians that blatantly lie to the public for the interests of multinational corporations.
