    SCHIP revision

Here's a link that any tobacco user, particularly pipe and cigarette smokers need be concerned about but it affects us all. This type of legislation smacks of Big Tobacco and is going to put many a small retailer out of business. Read this link from LBSS for more info on what the House just released as an amendment to an already unfair tax on loose tobaccos: http://www.lilbrown.com/smoke_signals.php

As Rush used to say, we should all start smoking. It's to support the children. The government needs tobacco taxes to help the children, so the other 250,000,000 Americans and who knows how many illegal residents need to step up and help bear the cost.

Then as tax revenue goes down, they'll raise the taxes again complaining they aren't getting enough money. IDIOTS!

SCHIP passed yesterday, do these tax hikes need to be voted on separately?

While these increases don't affect smokeless tobacco too badly, we need to oppose stuff like this, because they'll start taxing us at $24/pound sooner or later if we remain silent.

Thank you James, this is the truth and each easy passage is gonna have these dogs droolin for more. Besides contacting your congressman via email and phone calls, this is something everyone can do in the meantime and takes only a couple minutes. .. http://www.nocigtax.com/

The harder it is for them to pass it, the less they'll ask for next time around. We all know that Internet tobacco sale bans are high priority on their upcoming lists too. Goodbye Swedish Snus. Link to as many supportive friends and relatives you can come up with. This prejudicial taxation is gonna spread rampant in these next few years.

Great James, hopefully more than a few people will take a couple minutes and respond to that site. This is an easy way to get in touch with the appropriate parties for each individuals politicians quickly and pain free.

Hopefully snusers won't say; "it's cigarettes, who cares" and the same for pipe and cigar smokers, all of which got off easy this time. Next time it's gonna be them, and then us. Opposing will be useless unless all 20 million tobacco users respond at once, not just for their particular habit. Divide and conquer, that's how they get us each time.

Have you posted a link to your blog here yet NoArms?

Not yet, but I will tonight, or tomorrow at the latest. I went on a PC cleaning spree this evening, and it has my attention at the moment.

Funny, that's why I didn't see it being right in front of my face the whole time.

Is it only where I live that Pall Mall is NOT a discounted brand? I keep hearing/reading that but they're right up there with Marlboros and Newports. Planning on adding snuff to your blog?

Great idea, I take it you didn't like Kronan much though.....

Kronan is so gross, I'd rather suck on a dirty gym sock.

The senate just released their version of the SCHIP bill which will hit the floor this coming Monday. It varies a little from the House's version so gives a good idea what Hussein gonna receive, he's already voiced his intention to sign SCHIP into law.

From the looks of everything so far, oral tobaccos will only experience a slight increase, along with cigars. The biggest victims of the bill are gonna be pipe tobacco at $2.80 a lb and RYO tobacco at an industry destroying $24.78 per lb.

Info courtesy of Mark Ryan of D&R tobacco.

Below is a link which will take you to S.275, the 285-page version of the SCHIP bill reported out of the Senate Finance Committee today. The revenue provisions begin on page 271. The bill will be brought to the Senate floor on Monday evening, January 26th and debate is expected to take up much of the week.

To fund the $300 million dental insurance provision adopted in committee, the excise tax on large cigars will be 52.75% with a cap of 40.26 cents. The cigarette tax goes up 2/3 of a cent to $1.0066 per pack. Little cigars also go up to $1.0066 per pack or $50.33 per 1,000 without any phase-in as provided for in the House version. Snuff goes up to $1.51 per pound, chewing tobacco up to 50.33 cents per pound, pipe tobacco up to $2.8311 per pound and ryo tobacco up to $24.78 per pound.

The effective date remains April 1, 2009 and the floor stocks tax on all products except large cigars is due August 1, 2009.
