    Swedish Candy...

OK, I couldn't resist... In my last Northerner order I threw in two bags of this Bilar candy. They say it's the best selling car in Sweden

To me they taste like a chewy version of Smarties, with a hint of menthol. Anyone have other recommendations for other Swedish candy?

You kind of have to be there. Bilar and Batar are sort of like Skittles and Starburst, and can be bought in any Ikea. In Sweden they have common "godis" (candy) stores - that also sell tobacco (yes, snus too) and newspapers - that are filled to the brim with amazing candy of all kinds. It's all self-serve with scoops and bags. They have similar but smaller selections in their grocery stores. The "Swedish fish" you get in the States is really nothing like the real thing. Then again, I'm not sure if Sweden makes all the candy in their stores. A lot of it is like Haribo candy, which is made somewhere else (Netherlands?). Still, it's nice to be somewhere that takes candy seriously.

My favourite has to be Djungelvral - it's a proper hardcore salmiak. It's coated in ammonia salt as well as being slightly salty itself. Certainly wakes you up! Once you get over the initial shock - it's really addictive too.

I'm just gutted that I can't find a picture of the packet my dad bought me after visiting Finland when I was a kid. It had the most fantastic cartoon of an elephant farting fire and burning a hole in it's blue and white striped trousers. I think it was Tyrkisk Peber candy but the current packets are slightly more restrained with a cowboy puking fire instead.

I'm pretty sure this sort of thing could only sell well in Scandanavia!

Tyrkisk Peber are wonderful. I've never seen them with farting elephants or puking cowboys, though   Must be something endemic to Finland. I usually get them in these tins:

Those descriptions don't trigger "candy" in my mind.

I love new food that is strange to me. I might try some.

I love watching Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern travel around the world trying indigenous delicacies.

My dream is to be independently wealthy some day and travel the globe on a gastronomic journey.

Salmiak is a unique experience O.o. It isn't like any candy you've had, but it's strangely addictive.

Gee thanks alot guys..............I read this thread an hour ago and went right to Northerner and bought $50 worth of a variety of candy.......and some snus. My wife helped me pick out the candy. I think it was a bad idea to let her know Northerner has other stuff besides snus.

like I really needed to buy candy.......... :P
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Hi - just saw this thread about candy.

I had gotten someone else's order - and in it was a bunch of candy.

Xobe asked for a review so I put it up on that post.

But here it is - hope it helps. (Link: http://www.snuson.com/viewtopic.php?t=2373)

                    ----

                    Here's my report.

Please pardon that I have no accents in my text. I have written down
what is on the front of the packaging. Please don't ask me for ingredients!!!

Overall - quality is good. Can't say it is better than American
candy as the tastes are different.

Malaco - Gott and Blandat, surt
Nice. Slightly sour gummy bear type. Not very sour. Just a bit.
                    Assorted flavors

                    Malaco - PimPim ,original
OK - small red jelly bean things - without the outer sugar coating
                    Strawberry twizler flavor.

                    Ahlgrens - Bilar, original
Interesting. Can't compare to american candy. Little car
shaped gummy thing. Pastel colors (not sure on flavor)

                    Haribo - Salt Bomber
Round salt Licorice - very strong salt, just like it is called.

                    Malaco - Fruxo - original
Similar to PimPims above - but assorted fruit flavors

Filidutter - (On package: forst salt - sedan sot - & sist sour!)
Wild! Burst of the "salt" flavor like the salt bomber
then goes sweet. Hard candy. Can't place the flavor yet,
mild tasting Lemonhead maybe? Not sure.

I think you either love or hate the salt licorice stuff, first reaction
might be to spit it out immediately - in which case, do so! But try
again before deciding you hate it.

PS: Massive sugar shock after doing the testing.

The cool thing about Bilar is that the flavor changes as you chew it... It's like that experimental gum in the Willy Wonka movie...
