People need to stop scaring cats with cucumbers, say animal behaviorists

The new viral craze is apparently scaring cats with cucumbers, because the Internet is a weird place and humans enjoy low-grade animal cruelty as long as it's adorable.

But National Geographic reports that we should all maybe not be scaring our cats with cucumbers. According to Upvoted, the first cat-scared-by-cucumber video appears to have been uploaded in May and went viral by July or so.

Countless others followed, to the point where Reddit has an entire Cucumbers Scaring Cats community. The idea behind these videos is that if you put a cucumber behind a cat, it'll freak out when it sees it.

This comes after The American Humanist Association’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center's attorneys were enlisted to assist with the woman's appeal after she was denied the right to wear it in her license photo by the RMV.
Lindsay Miller says she is a Pastafarian, also known as a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which is a secular religion that believes the existence of a "spaghetti monster" to be just as possible as the existence of God. So she filed an administrative appeal and was scheduled to attend an appeal in October about the matter, but it was postponed and the RMV has decided to let her wear the spaghetti strainer in her photo.
Miller said, "As a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I feel delighted that my Pastafarianism has been respected by the Massachusetts RMV. While I don't think the government can involve itself in matters of religion, I do hope this decision encourages my fellow Pastafarian Atheists to come out and express themselves as I have."

    Park nudity leads to arrest
    WHIO ^

A man who led police on a three-county chase in August is in jail again, this time on public nudity charges.
David Simpson, 22, address at large, is in Wayne County Jail on a charge of public nudity after police say he was found running naked in Glen Miller Park in Richmond Wednesday night.
In August, Simpson allegedly drove a stolen BMW from Indianapolis to Englewood at speeds of 110 miles per hour. Multiple law enforcement jurisdictions were engaged in a chase with the stolen vehicle.
Simpson attempted to drive through a closed construction area on Interstate 70. He lost control of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
He was later apprehended in the Meijer parking lot on North Main Street and charged with driving a vehicle without a license, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, obstruction of official business, and failure to comply with the order of a police officer.

Office of Civil Rights says disguised boy has right to shower with girls

The Department of Education's office of civil rights says that a disguised boy has been discriminated against because he is not allowed to shower naked with girls.
Federal education authorities, staking out their firmest position yet on an increasingly contentious issue, found Monday that an Illinois school district violated anti-discrimination laws when it did not allow a transgender student who identifies as a girl and participates on a girls’ sports team to change and shower in the girls’ locker room without restrictions.
The Education Department gave 30 days to the officials of Township High School District 211 to reach a solution or face enforcement, which could include administrative law proceedings or a Justice Department court action. The district could lose some or all of its Title IX funding.

In a letter sent Monday, the Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Education told the Palatine district that requiring a transgender student to use private changing and showering facilities was a violation of that student’s rights under Title IX, a federal law that bans sex discrimination. The student, who identifies as female but was born male, should be given unfettered access to girls’ facilities, the letter said.
The boy should be given unfettered access to naked girls. What's confusing about that?
The district said she was allowed to change inside the girls’ locker room, but only behind a curtain. The student, who has not been publicly identified, has said she would probably use that curtain to change. But she and the federal government have insisted that she be allowed to make that decision voluntarily, and not because of requirements by the district.

Husband of Oklahoma Mayor 'Meant no Harm' With KKK Costume

An Oklahoma mayor told NBC News that her husband "meant no harm" when he and a few friends dressed up as Ku Klux Klan members on Halloween and placed a cross beside a fire.
A photo of the men was posted online, where it quickly triggered intense criticism and cries of bigotry. The image, which was taken by someone who called the police, Garfield County Sheriff Jerry Niles told NBC News, shows two men clad in white hoods standing beside a cross.
Lahoma Mayor Theresa Sharp, 47, said the image also led to calls for her resignation.
"I have no intention of doing so," she said, adding that her husband, Cary Sharp, 47, had simply made "some very bad choices."
"It's four good ol' boys sitting around drinking and things got out of control," she said.
"They didn't see the harm in dressing up as the KKK, in comparison to other people dressing up as murderers and bombers," she said.
She was with Lahoma's police chief when, she said, he got a call from the county's sheriff's office: people on her street were dressed as KKK members.
"Neighbors were upset," Sheriff Jerry Niles told NBC News. A deputy responded and it turned out to be Cary Sharp and three friends. The officer asked them stop, Niles said, "which they did."
Theresa Sharp said that the men never lit the cross on fire, nor did they intend to. "They basically had a stick on fire," she said. "They were holding it up next to the cross."

DC Doctors May Be Forced To Take LGBTQ ‘Cultural Competency’ Classes
    The Stream ^

With the number of gay and transgender people on the upswing in the District of Columbia, city council members want to force doctors to take cultural competency classes to better accommodate them.
The council heard testimony Wednesday from local activists urging them to pass legislation that would make "LGBTQ cultural competency training" a part of their continuing education requirements.
The new regulations would require any medical professional to take two courses on LGBTQ cultural competency in order to obtain or renew their licenses or certifications to work in the District.
According to the new law, the classes must “teach attitudes, knowledge, and skills that enable a health care professional to care effectively for patients who identify as LGTBQ.”
If passed, the new law would make D.C. one of just five other states that require cultural competence training.
Laquandra Nesbitt, director of the D.C. Department Of Health, said the training would teach doctors about body language and social interactions and how those from other cultures may have different opinions about what certain things mean.
"[The training] helps you to identify skills that help you to have interactions that are not offensive to people of other cultures," she said.
She said the regulations aren’t designed to make doctors experts on how different cultures work, but to give them a better idea on how to handle people of different backgrounds.
Several advocates at the hearing said they were personally denied care or treated in a discriminatory way when they sought medical care from doctors.
Allison Gill, senior legislative counsel at the Human Rights Campaign, a gay equal rights organization, said just because transgender people have access to healthcare, it doesn’t mean doctors are adequately informed about transgender-specific issues.
"I find that, as a trans person, you’re constantly having to educate your health professionals," she said.
Rick Rosendall, president of Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance, said that one in five transgender people have been denied healthcare due to their sexual identification, and when he, personally, looked for “culturally competent” doctors, he didn’t have much luck.
"Our community faces the particular problem of invisibility," he said, while other minority groups already have protections in place for them.
The new law would force doctors to understand “the intersections between systems of oppression and discrimination” experienced by gay and transgender people. In order to meet this expectation, doctors would need to establish best practices for obtaining and using terminology, like titles and pronouns deemed acceptable by the LGBTQ community, when addressing patients. Doctors would also need to train their support staff on how to treat LGBTQ people.
If the law is passed, Mayor Muriel Bowser will grant funding to organizations with experience in cultural competency to develop and implement programs to train doctors.

There’s a feminist civil war brewing over Caitlyn Jenner

Feminist Stalwart versus Transgender Icon: It may sound like a warped new comic strip, but really it’s the first installment in what could be a series of very real conflicts between warring politically correct factions.
Germaine Greer, the 76-year-old author of “The Female Eunich,” is making waves by lambasting the idea that Caitlyn Jenner may be honored by Glamour Magazine as “Woman of the Year.” Jenner isn’t a woman, says Greer. He’s just attention-starved and seeking to steal the limelight from the women in the Kardashian family.
He hasn’t actually had to endure what feminists depict as the true horrors of womanhood, such as being cursed with what Greer delicately characterizes as a “big, hairy, smelly vagina.”
When told that such comments are hurtful to the transgender community, Greer doubled down. “Try being an old woman. For goodness sake, people get hurt all the time, I’m not about to walk on eggshells.”
Those who have long walked on eggshells trying not to offend Greer’s feminist sisters should feel free to laugh.
For decades, feminists have skillfully wielded their victimhood status as a weapon, drawing it and striking public figures who fail to follow their obscure, but strictly enforced, rules. Use the word “bossy,” “silly,” “hysterical,” “shrill,” mention that women bear children or fail to mention that women bear children and you might face the wrath of the PC feminist police.

Why '5+5+5=15' is wrong under the Common Core

Here's a "repeated addition" Common Core problem that's taught in third grade in US schools:
Use the repeated-addition strategy to solve: 5x3
If you answer the question with "5+5+5=15,” you would be wrong.
    The correct answer is "3+3+3+3+3.”
Mathematically, both are correct. But under Common Core, you're supposed to read "5x3" as "five groups of three." So "three groups of five" is wrong.
According to Common Core defenders, this method will be useful when students do more advanced math. This way of reading things, for instance, can be used when students learn matrices in multivariable calculus in high school.
But parents aren't happy about it.

Yes, “Mr. Norris said the regulations covering cousins marrying were introduced to protect the genetic pool, but that this would remain relatively untroubled by same-sex marriage.”
Then wouldn’t the same line of reasoning apply to gay brothers or sisters who wanted to “marry?”
And if the taboos against homosexual “marriage” are now considered outdated and intolerant, why can’t the same thing be said about the taboos against adult incest and beastiality? You aren't likely to have offspring with your cat.
