    Canada rejects African-American's asylum claim

TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian tribunal has rejected a claim for refugee status from an African-American man who said he feared persecution and police abuse in the United States based on his race, the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada said on Friday.
While saying he did find Kyle Lydell Canty to have a genuine fear of returning to his home country, adjudicator Ron Yamauchi said that was not enough to grant asylum.
A string of shootings of black men by U.S. police over the past 18 months have led to widespread protests and the issue has fueled a civil rights movement under the name Black Lives Matter.
"The Act does not protect claimants from every form of ill-treatment, suffering, and hardship," he wrote in the decision, dated Dec. 3. "It is addressed at situations of persecution, which is serious harm, an interference with a basic human right."
He added: "There are no substantial grounds to believe that his removal to the United States of America would subject him personally to a danger of torture."[continued]

Here’s another “people of Wal-Mart” story … with a twist.

A Florida woman driving a motorized shopping cart around a local Wal-Mart made herself at home while in the store, eating and drinking to her heart’s desire.
Josseleen Elida Lopez, 20, was arrested by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office after she consumed $32.36 worth of food and wine, according to WFLA-TV.

Included among her dining choices were cinnamon rolls, mini muffins, sushi, a rotisserie chicken with sauce and two bottles of S. Home wine.

A loss prevention employee took the hungry shoplifter into custody after seeing her helping herself while riding around the store.
Deputies found two empty syringes on Lopez, one in her purse and one in her backpack, WFLA-TV reported. She admitted to the officers that she had used the syringes to inject crystal meth earlier.
Lopez told deputies that she was homeless and said she ate the food because she was hungry, but didn’t want to bring it outside of the store.
She faces shoplifting and drug paraphernalia charges.

Transgender man in Ecuador makes history with pregnancy

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) A couple in Ecuador is making history with a unique pregnancy: The father-to-be is carrying the baby of his transgender partner.

Fernando Machado and Diane Rodriguez announced their pregnancy, believed to be the first of its kind in South America, on social media earlier this month and it's received widespread attention in a continent that has seen a sudden explosion in the rights and visibility of trans people.
Rodriguez, who was born Luis, is one of Ecuador's most-prominent LGBT activists and says she and her Venezuelan-born partner, whose birth name was Maria, decided to publicize the pregnancy to help change attitudes in the staunchly Roman Catholic society. Although both take hormones, neither has undergone gender-reassignment surgery, so the child-to-be was conceived the old-fashioned way with no known medical complications to date.
"We're trying to break the myths about transsexuality," Rodriguez told The Associated Press

Woman Dies After Being Forcibly Removed From Hospital

A woman who refused to leave a hospital when doctors discharged her died after she was forcibly removed by police, authorities said Tuesday.
Barbara Dawson, 57, collapsed Monday while being escorted in handcuffs from the Liberty Calhoun Hospital, where she went to seek treatment for breathing difficulties, said Blountstown Police Department chief Mark Mallory. Mallory said an officer had arrested Dawson for disorderly conduct and trespassing.
An autopsy on Dawson has been performed and the results should be released Wednesday, Mallory said. Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials have been called in to investigate, department spokesman Steve Arthur said. He declined to comment further.
Mallory said that the officer who arrested Dawson removed the handcuffs after she collapsed and escorted her back into the hospital.
"We were told by a doctor once she got back in the hospital that her vital signs were good and it was their decision to readmit her," he said. He said dashcam footage from the officer's car does not show the incident but does pick up the audio.
Hospital officials did not return telephone calls Tuesday night. Ruth Attaway, administrator and CEO of the hospital, was quoted by The Tallahassee Democrat as saying that staff did everything they could to save Dawson.
While doctors initially thought Dawson was stable and should be released, she felt like she was still having breathing issues and wanted to stay, said Tallahassee attorney Daryl Parks, who is representing Dawson's family.
"The most reasonable thing to do is to let her sit there and be able to settle down until she felt well. Instead, she is forcibly removed and put in cuffs," Parks said. "The early facts of this case should cause a great concern for everyone."

Angry single men stage anti-Christmas rally in Tokyo
    France24 ^ |

Anti-Christmas protesters calling themselves "Losers with Women" marched through Tokyo's streets Saturday, bashing the upcoming holiday as a capitalist ploy that also discriminates against singletons.
The group of about 20 -- part of the Communist-inspired group that routinely protests Western holidays -- marched under angry banners that read "Smash Christmas!" in Tokyo's Shibuya district, where couples and families strolled for holiday shopping.
The scrooges -- mostly single men -- said they were against capitalism and were opposed to the commercialisation of Christmas.
"In this world, money is extracted from people in love, and happy people support capitalism," said the head of the organisation, formally called Kakumeiteki Hi-mote Domei, or the Revolutionary Losers' League.
"Christmas is the most symbolic event for this," he added.
The man, who identified himself only by the pseudonym MarkWater, said the rally was also in support of unloved men.
"Unpopular men, who don't have a girlfriend or are not married, are overly discriminated. We want to break this barrier," he told AFP amid the shouting protesters.
In Japan, Christmas is not an official holiday and is mostly celebrated informally as a romantic event for couples, while the New Year's day is an occasion for family reunion.
The Christian population remains small in the Asian country, stores offer special holiday sales and people decorate Christmas trees at home.
The group has held past marches to denounce imported Western holidays, including rallies against Valentine's Day.

Saudi millionaire beats rape charge after claiming he ‘fell into’ teen

A millionaire businessman has been found not guilty of rape after claiming he accidentally penetrated her when he tripped and fell.
Ehsan Abdulaziz, 46, was initially accused of forcing himself on the 18-year-old as she slept on a couch at his London flat after a night of drinking.
The Saudi property developer said he had already had sex with the young womans 24-year-old friend and it was possible his penis may have been poking out of his underwear when he tripped.

The Mirror reported the group had met at an exclusive West End club last year where he entertained them before offering them a lift home.
The 18-year-old claimed that after a number of drinks at Abdulazizs north London home, she went to sleep on the couch.

She said she woke up to find him on top of her, forcing himself on her.

She woke up with the defendant kissing her and his penis in her vagina, prosecutor Jonathan Davies told the Southwark Crown Court.

She said: ˜What are you doing? and he said˜Its fine, indicating that her friend was asleep.

She got up to find her friend, tried to wake her but couldnt, she then tried to get out of the flat as quickly as she could.”

Abdulaziz said he had accidentally fallen on the teenager and that she tried to seduce him, and that was how his DNA got onto her vagina.
Im fragile, I fell down but nothing ever happened, between me and this girl nothing ever happened,” he said.

He also told the court it was possible he had semen on his hands after having sex with the young womans friend.

The jury acquitted Abdulaziz after just 30 minutes of deliberations.

World's longest-surviving castaway sued for $1 million after being accused of 'eating his colleague'

Salvador Alvarenga, who survived for 438 days adrift at sea, is now being sued by his fellow fisherman's family amid accusations that he ate Ezequiel Cordoba's corpse
A fisherman who stunned the world by surviving 15 months lost at sea is being sued for $1 million (£650,000) by the family of his dead colleague, who accuse him of eating their relative to ensure his own survival.

Salvador Alvarenga, 36, is the only man known to have survived for over a year at sea.
And when he set sail from the coast of Mexico in November 2012, he thought he was setting out on a two-day fishing trip, having paid 22-year-old Ezequiel Cordoba $50 to accompany him.

But a vicious storm with 10ft waves knocked out the 25ft boats communication systems, and washed their supplies overboard.

Mr Alvarenga, a hard-living, tough professional from El Salvador, radioed the boats owner and demanded to be rescued. His last words to land were: Come now, I am really getting ------ out here.

Cordoba, a novice fisherman, panicked, said Mr Alvarenga.
He suffered hallucinations and tried to throw himself overboard, where sharks were circling. The pair survived for several months by catching fish and birds, and drinking turtle blood and rainwater. But one bird they ate made Cordoba severely sick, and they found a yellow poisonous sea snake inside its stomach.

Schools continue to grapple with 'Huckleberry Finn'

After The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published in 1885, the book was boycotted in some places in the United States for portraying friendship between a black man and a white boy.
"In its time, it was derided and censored," said Deborah Caldwell-Stone, deputy director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, which tracks challenges to books.
Today, Mark Twain's classic - about a boy who flees his abusive father and travels down the Mississippi River with an escaped slave - is still sometimes challenged in American schools, but for nearly the opposite reason: its liberal use of the N-word and perceived racist portrayals of black characters.
This week, a Montgomery County school removed Huckleberry Finn from its curriculum after a group of students said the book made them uncomfortable.
