Everest summit photo, you can clearly see the curvature of the earth

True, the angle may exaggerate it, but still a good pic.Originally posted by DarwinYou can indeed see the curve from atop Everest but in this picture the curve is very exaggerated by the near fisheye lens being used on the camera. Also I did not realize that the summit of Everest is starting to look like a real garbage dump.
They are the Nepalese and Tibetan prayer flags marking the summit (as if you could miss it!) I know a lot are put up there to honour dead climbers and sherpas.

Everest is the staging post for their spirit to ascent into heaven from what I know, its a very spiritual place for the Nepalese and Tibetans, its name in Tibetan means Mother Earth (chomoloungma), hence the prayer flagsOriginally posted by sirloottellem to goto to base camp if they wanna pray about it .. it seriously spoils the natural look of things

Comparable to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, prayers are written on scraps of paper and pushed into the joints between the stones......who's gonna' clean up that mess....;-)

President Obama goes to the Wailing Wall to pay his respects and encounters an elderly Hasidim at prayer. The old Jew can see Obama doesn't really know how to do it, so he instructs him: "This is the wall at which we ask God for all things, where we lift our anguish to Him, and leave our worst worries to His care."
Obama says: "That's lovely. What did you ask God for?"
Old man: "I asked for an end to violence in Israel, and peace and a separate homeland for the poor Palestinians we displaced as I have every day since the Balfour agreement."
Obama asks: "And you feel that is helping?"
Old man shrugs as he replies: "ITS LIKE TALKING TO A ******** WALL!"

Hard to take it seriously with westerners treating it like Disneyland, and the lowest common denominator going up with the best skills money can buy. All the while leaving their shit(literally, and figuratively) strewn across the mountain.Originally posted by Skell18Everest is the staging post for their spirit to ascent into heaven from what I know, its a very spiritual place for the Nepalese and Tibetans, its name in Tibetan means Mother Earth (chomoloungma), hence the prayer flags

Very true, the criteria for an expedition is being tightened and the rubbish closely monitored (allegedly), so officials will get phat of bribes.Originally posted by lxskllrHard to take it seriously with westerners treating it like Disneyland, and the lowest common denominator going up with the best skills money can buy. Anyway this isn't a thread about the political situation in Nepal etc its just a cool picture where you can see the curvature of the earth, pretty cool if you ask me, all the crap aside.
