Running a laptop with an i5 processor with Ubuntu?

Pretty much this. Ubuntu should run fine, but if you require something like Autocad, you need Windows.

I will mainly use Firefox... but perhaps edit large audio mixes... perhaps edit the odd photo in GIMP.... use LibreOffice from time to time.... view PDFs...

You can do all of that. I use Audacity for audio editing, but I'm not an advanced user.

I love Goldwave on the PC and even paid for the full version. But on Ubuntu i'll be fine with whatever audio editor. As long as saving like 300mb wave files or something doesn't take too long to process and save.

Personally, I'd keep windows on it. I like Linux, but I'm not a fan of Ubuntu anymore. If its properly tuned, you can get matching performance.

It usually only takes overnight. If that doesn't rescue the dead hard drive, extra time won't help :^P
