Keep sound from getting to the downstairs apartment?

I've recently moved to a house that's been converted into 4 apartments (no soundproofing). How can I keep the sound from my subwoofer from getting to my downstairs neighbor? Will a memory foam pillow under the sub work? It's a 10" Klipsch 240w. Packs a great punch for it's size.

Most obvious answer is turn it down.

It is also probably the most inexpensive that will work. If the construction it self lends the sound to travel so easily there is little simple you can do. Bass frequencies travel well through solids, any dampening you do underneath the unit will also affect how you hear it and then you will turn up the volume more to compensate sending it just as much to them. Whatever dampening is lacking needs to be between your floor and their ceiling not your floor and the speaker. The only way you could do it is to build a new floor over the existing that is dampened from the existing.

Ok there is one other possibility. Notch filtering. I bet it is only certain frequencies that are causing the problem and there is a natural resonance occurring that is transmitting those frequencies better than others. If you can identify them then a quality EQ and some experimentation might yield some results. However it might rob the overall feel of the sound by reducing those frequencies. YMMV on any of these solutions.

Mount it on the ceiling. j/k

You really cant do anything. Like said before bass travels well. Like the cars with the big subs, you hear the bass a block away, but not the treble.
You could move the sub away from the corner - if its there - and that will reduce its resonances it picks up from the room and reduce its impact output.

Question is the subwoofer used for watching movies or listening to music? If its either and headphones will do you can buy a small desktop amplifier, if its for movies you can get one that included surround sound simulation through headphones( sounds the same as actual surround sound) You can go all out and get the Astro mixamp which also works with my xbox and delivers surround sound. I used to be a big speaker guy but nothing beats the sound of clear crisp headphones connected to a great desktop amp

I disagree with the part thats bolded. I have Mcintosch equipment and I just sold my Klipschorns [the big corner horns]. Listening to that system is like being at a live concert.......with out the distortion. With headphones you just can't feel the bass. Of course my system could break windows......as well as provide me with a great deal of hearing loss over 40 years. ;(

However, the difference in cost is probably around $17,000. So that would have to be taken into consideration also.

Wow thats pretty dope PP. I was just saying as a personal preference of my own i prefer headphones because then i also dont need to worry about people complaining about sound. I just myself being better able to lock into something with music when I have headphones too. It's all preference. Right now I've got the astro mixamp and its connected to my xbox and computer.....and sometimes my phone since i find navigating music easier on an mp3 player format than on a computer....and ive got the sennheiser 650's. Definitely not 17k worth of equipment, but very very good by my standards

For the money, this setup beats the shit out of headphones in the same price range. Klipsch ProMedia 2.1
