do you guys know anything about Roku?

I'm ignorant when it comes to tech and I just heard about Roku. It says it works wirelessly and can hook up to any tv. Is the high def quality good on it? My wife and I got the WiFi through att u-verse. Looking through the netflix site looks like we can see a bunch of old shows and movies.

I trust your guys opinion and know you'll give me the bottom line.

Talk about Ironic............I was just looking at this (or something just like it) tonight at..........wait for it.............WALMART

Looks like it would be great for anything streaming......but for other things you would still need cable/satellite.

As far as the tec end of things..............I'm pretty sure it requires a power source........beyond that………… I'm worthless

Works great. No rental fees just buy the box and go. Rather simple to set-up as well. Not to mention it's cheap. But if you have a nintendo wii you can also use your wi-fi with it and get netflix.

Ha good deal SD... Let me know how it works for you if you get it.

I'm getting tired or current tv and miss watching good quality movies and shows. This may be the ticket.

Thanks blue, no wii but we got WiFi and the roku box works off it. I may pay for the netflix subscription. I'm assuming they have all the new movies as well. Tired of the red box lol.

If you want new releases you have to get the streaming and the dvd in the mail. It's like 15 bucks a month. I get 6-8 dvd's a month and the streaming for when the dvd's are in the mail. It takes a lil searching but if you try you can find plenty of stuff to watch streaming. Not to mention if your kid is old enough they have a sh!t ton of kids programming on streaming netflix.

                I have Direct TV

And they are offering the very same thing for free and will even give you the hook up and equipment for free.

Not sure where I will get screwed on this....though I am sure I will somehow..............that's why I have not signed on yet........but if you have Direct......you might look into it (Direct on Demand is what it is called)........again......I am always leery........so check it out before jumping at it

                  1. What are they offering for free? Wifi access that can handle netflix?

                  2. If so it doesn't matter because you are correct you will get screwed. Most likely you will need to upgrade the hardware that they then will charge you more for in the equipment rental department. There is nothing for free in the pay tv world dog. Roku has no fees $50 bucks you own it and no equipment rental add ons. Better yet get a refurbished wii at gamestop and you can make your kids grandkids or company happy when you bust out wii sports and bowl a few frames.

The roku is a neat device but I opted for the Sony Streamer instead. It can just about all of the same internet content as the roku and often you can find on sale at a comparable price. The additional thing the Sony Streamer can do is to play DLNA content if you are running a DLNA server or for that matter you can connect an external HD to it via USB and it will play content from that as well. Truly the only thing comparable is if you have AppleTV and then all of the content would need to be purchased through iTunes.

The streamer uses the same OS as what is in the Sony Blueray players so you could also just buy a Sony Blueray player and have even more options.

I bought a WD HD Live from Tiger Direct when it was on sale.

It had better reviews as far as playing exotic file formats compared to the Roku, Sony, and Apple devices.

So far I haven't found a file it won't play. MKV, AVI, etc...

I coughed up the $7.99 a month for Netflix and can't believe how much I actually watch it.

                              These things are awesome.
