I remember when Usenet first started and there were only a handful of .alt groups. When the Internet exploded, Usenet turned into a "vast wasteland." I agree with shikitobno, the torrents are where it is at today. I can't imagine paying for Usenet access. Check out http://freeusenet.org/ It's not the best in the world, but you can find some free feeds there. IMO, all Usenet is today is Warz and Porn. Social networking and blogs have replaced the majority of what Usenet was created for. Usenet has gone the way of gopher, lynx and archie... just as Outlook has replaced PINE.

If I really wanted to avoid torrenting, I'd just save myself the money and grab what I wanted off bots. Usenet might be fun, but I think I'll stick to torrents and multiplayer notepad sessions for my piratical needs. A decent XDCC bot will offer 1.2-1.5 MB/s transfers anyway, and you can find just about whatever you want if you know how to go about it.

I've used Giganews and UNS, They're both good.

Everybody that comes along tries to compare themselves to Giganews which has over the years pretty much set the standards for speed and days of retention, but they also are more expensive. I started with Giganews and then switched to UNS to save a few dollars a month. I've had no complaints about either.

    No Speed Limits
    No Download Limits
Exactly the same as Unlimited DSL Plan
You will pay $11 for every month as long as your subscription remains active. We will not raise the price.

I use Astraweb and do not pay monthly. I think I paid $25 for the ability to download 120 GB. That was perhaps 2 years ago and I still have a lot left.

    Paging JustinTempler, please explain USENET

I know at least one or two of you around here use this. I am trying to get into using USENET but there are different places to subscribe to and I don't know which place has the best service and is most worth the money. For those of you USENET people out there, where do you go and how much do you pay monthly?
