    Jimi Hendrix Park

Latest designs presented for Jimi Hendrix Park

SEATTLE -- Seattle parks officials and landscape architects presented the latest conceptual designs for the proposed Jimi Hendrix Park at a public meeting Thursday night.

The city plans to build the park in honor of the legendary Seattle guitarist in the location of the old Colman school in the Central District. Planners envision a community space that would also be an extension of the Northwest African American Museum, providing educational programming and developing cultural heritage for people young and old.

After three public design meetings over the summer, landscape architects Murase Associates developed three park design options inspired by Hendrix: a guitar, a spiral flower and a butterfly.

Murase Associates presented this guitar inspired plan as the preferred design scheme by the Seattle Parks Department and the Jimi Hendrix Parks Foundation. Some special features of the park include a central canopy and stage, a sound wave wall with cutouts of Jimi Hendrix's image, and rain water canopy.

Mark Tilbe, senior associate at Murase Associates, said the project has about $400,000 to cover the design basics, such as site grading and planting of trees and plants, but more money is needed to pay for the park's special features.

The price tag for the entire project is $2 million. A little more than a quarter of that has already been raised. The Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation plan to hold several fundraising events starting in January of 2012.

Participants at Thursday's meeting also discussed noise and safety issues at the park. Tilbe said the park design will undergo a CPTED review process, which include how easily patrol cars can enter the park and placement of high growth shrubs.

Construction is slated to start at the end of the year. The hope is to have most of the park completed by the 70th anniversary of Jimi's birth next year.

Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle on November 27, 1942. He was recently named by Rolling Stone magazine as the greatest guitarist of all time.
