Anybody know what kind of camcorder I need

I'm looking to convert a bunch of old VHS-c tapes to my computer but can't figure out if I need to buy a new digital video recorder or if there is some device I can get to interface with the computer. Trying to put this together before christmas so I can surprise my ma. If anyone has any info it would be much appreciated.........

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I have two miniature camcorder tapes from 2005 that contain a bunch of footage from a trip my girl and I took across China. I was borrowing my brother's camcorder on the trip, and due to laziness or whatever, I returned it to him before ever even watching the videos. I found the tapes the other day, and I also have a VHS of some old footage from when I was a kid, and I decided that the easiest thing to do would be to take them all to a video production studio in town and have them convert all to DVD. I don't think it will be very expensive, and I won't have to **** with finding the right camcorder for the small tapes or whatever device is necessary for the VHS tape. Maybe call around to some local studios and see what they would charge. That might be a stupid idea, but again, laziness and a very low-tech lifestyle are factors for me.

Yeah but I got a ton of em from when we were growing up. I actually have the camcorder but it's old school and in all the years we used it never even hooked it up to a tv as it was VHS-C so it has an adapter. Now that I think about it I have a vcr to use the tapes in but how do I get them to interface with the computer? I guess that's my real question....... Somebody here has to have some experience with this........

Apple computer? That might be tough. You can get PC TV tuner cards that'll have RCA inputs, or used to anyway. They're starting to get obsolete :^D but I don't know about Apple. There's also USB solutions, but again, I don't know exactly what's out there.

I've always found working with video to be a PITA. I don't do it often, so I forget how I did things, and it's a new experience all over again :^D

you can get a DVD player/recorder or a combo DVD/VHS recorder. You can plug your camcorder into the inputs of either unit to record whats on the tape to DVD. You have to have a player for the original tape. if you don't have those then you have to take it in to have it professionally converted. That might be easier because the guy i took my stuff to only charged me $20 per tape. And you can put several tapes on one disk. hope this helps

          also......what lx said

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Check this out ... 5 pages of step-by-step instructions:
From VHS to DVD | Video - Page 1 | Macworld

Or look through this Google Search:
convert a bunch of old vhs-c tapes to my osx computer - Google Search

Whatever approach you do use will be time consuming but well worth the effort.
            Good luck.
