Radiation levels and locations to be mapped in Puget Sound by helicopter

      OLYMPIA
      - Lessons from the nuclear incidents in Fukushima, Japan show the value of a project to measure background radiation levels in several parts of the state. A low-flying helicopter will gather radiological readings this summer, starting next week around Puget Sound.

Radiation detection equipment mounted in a helicopter will measure “gamma emitters” like cesium and radioactive iodine — materials that would likely increase in a radiation emergency. This kind of material releases X-rays, or gamma radiation, a type that can be easily measured from the helicopter. State radiation experts expect to find natural radioactivity and material produced by licensed radioactive material users such as hospitals.

The helicopter will fly a grid pattern at an altitude of about 300 feet to collect data. Mapping the normal amounts and location of radioactive material will provide a baseline for comparison to assess contamination if there were a nuclear incident like the events in Fukushima. Sampling in that area of Japan after the nuclear reactors were damaged produced radiation readings, but there was no baseline for comparison so it was unclear how much higher the levels had grown.

The Washington State Department of Health is overseeing the project as the U.S. Department of Energy’s Remote Sensing Laboratory Aerial Measurement System conducts the flyover. The project has been in planning since 2009 and is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The data collected will be part of a report after quality assurance review. The report will be available to the public, though some information may be withheld for national security reasons. If levels of radioactivity are high enough to pose any health concern, the source will be investigated.

The flyovers will start in Seattle and Bellevue before moving to other areas of King and Pierce Counties, including Tacoma. During the Puget Sound flyovers, the helicopter will be based at Boeing Air Field and will make daily flights between July 11 and 28.

Information about the project is available on the agency Aerial Radiological Survey website (www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/rp/rep/aerial.htm).

Public questions can be sent to prepare@doh.wa.gov. The Department of Health website (www.doh.wa.gov) is your source for a healthy dose of information. Also, find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Holy crap... I did not even think about the green tea I consume.... Tea plants are notorious for picking stuff up from the air especially things like fluoride, and radiation... No more green tea from Japan for a while..

        Kicking myself...

PS- Pot plants also suck up radiation like crazy.. I found it cool that they used fields of them after Chernobyl to suck the radiation from the soil... Another wonderful thing that lady green does for us...

Holy shit. This is weird because my mom got thyroid cancer a few weeks after the Fukishima reactor incident happened and a CT scan revealed that I had nodules growing in my lungs which may or may not be malignant about a month later, but i've never smoked so my doctor is wondering what I have been breathing that caused this. Do you think it could be related? It takes a long time for shit like that to affect you even if you've breathed it in doesn't it? It shouldn't happen that soon after exposure right? Now you got me trippin big blue.

Always had a feeling it was worse than we were being told; as always. As i was watching the videos, specifically the last one with Michio Kaku, one of the related videos worried me as well. Apparently a nuclear plant in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska is at risk due to flooding from the Missouri river. It worries me as it's very close to where i live, and i haven't seen ANYTHING in the news about it when the issues started last month. You have to love our media/ government.

Sgreger - That's horrible man, i hope both you and her caught it in time and are all right. As i understand it though, doesn't it take years at least from something like Fukishima to start seeing the health effects?

Sorry to hear that bud.. I am thinking the two are unrelated.. I can't say for sure but cancer takes awhile to grow enough to show up as nodules.. I am no radiation expert though but I think no is the correct answer...

Yah that's what I figured, I don't think it could be related because last I read it takes years for radiation exposure to manifest itself as cancer (at least in such small quantities liked this). It was just weird that it happened to both of us at the same time with no other explanation and a 40 year time gap between our ages. Coincidence I suppose.

I knew the Fukishima thing was worse than they led on, it's only par for the course. I don't think the radiation levels here present any real threat to Americans, but I think that events like these have a cumulitive effect. Look at WWII and all the radioactive shit that we threw into the air, then 40 years later everyone has cancer. Every event like this that happens is just another nail in the coffin. Hopefully humans can adapt to our new environment quick enough, because I think elevated background radiation levels will only increase as time goes by.

I hear ya... It is crazy and I do believe there is reason for alarm.. You don't want any fuel fleas in your body at all... That being said our bodies produce up to 200 cancer cells a day naturally and thankfully our badass Hounddog macrophages with their awesome complement hunt them down and kill em... So do your body a favor and get those polyphenols in one way or another... I would also recommend taking a immune boosting mushroom formula like the ones from Econegenics or Fungi Perfecti... I could go on and on about how these wonderful shrooms help your immune cascade recognize screwed up cells but I digress....

Seriously bud.. Go get some turkey tails(mushrooms from Fungi Perfecti) and follow their directions.. I have taken the gen blend for gen immune health for years but in your case you might want to take the concentrated turkey tails.. Seriously..look into it...

I've heard good things about this mushroom from one of my doctors.

I'll look into it further, thanks!

Good deal.. They are wonder mushrooms for cancer(turkey tails) but make sure you are taking them in a form and dose level that actually has effects.. So many people take a lower dose and that's great for immune strength but to get the system kickin you need a dose that's at a level thats been studied... If you don't have cancer or some other disease....a mix is a better route to go but for cancer and the like, those turkeys are key...

Cool picture man.. I love me some shrooms.. All kinds...

Edit-- I am not pluging one company just so you know.. I just have done tons of shroom research and Fungi Perfcti is good shi... The guy who owns it is a real hero in my eyes... Another great company is new chapter but they changed there supplier(fungi perfecti) and now there products are not quite as good in my eyes.. That being said, New Chapters extraction is supposed to be superior than Fungi Perfecti's so it's a personal decision..

I do know that the owner of Fungi Perfecti is one of the top mycologist in the world and does tons of work to keep and protect your awesome forest in the NW.. So you might like their work...

                        I will stop now.....

Thanks for the knowledge ABW! I take allicin for my immune system but i'm guessing these mushrooms may be more effective.

Check em out my friend... I truly believe there are a ton of undiscovered properties in the shroom kimdom that we are just beginning to learn.. One of the reasons is that their immune system is somewhat similar to ours and because of evaluation and what not they have certain adaptogens that are VERY beneficial to us....

I will stop again.. I could go on and on and then you guys would send some snuson assassin to kill me to get me to shut me up...

I can get some from the Bastyr Dispensary.

I'll ask my doctor. She will know more about it (dosage, how to take it, etc.)
