Your favourite albums?

Hmmm,,,, not to offend but I will end up doing that anyway. Shouldn't the artist that sings the songs be able to sing? There are many wonderful songwriters that are terrible singers. I think that maybe some of those, terrible singers, are included in some peoples' lists. I can't overlook that part of great albums. For instance, I think that Neil Young is a great artist yet a terrible singer. I can't get around that. That goes for Tom Petty too, but he is not as bad. Do you think that a good voice matters or should that be overlooked because of the quality of the content: great lyrics and great use of the instrument?

Those artists you mentioned in addition to my favorite(Bob Dylan), all have quite expressive voices. They may not have classically pretty voices, but they convey a great deal of emotion and unstated meaning. I'll take gritty expressiveness over pretty fluff any day of the week ;^)

Amen to that. Though Dylan or Young would bomb at the NY Met, they are both- in their own way- great singers.

i think there are people who dont have a great voice - but have a voice with character,and this often works well with the music.
Then there are people who just have terrible voices...and that is why i really dont like neil young.

Yeah, those Godspeed albums. I finally got Yanqui U.X.O. on vinyl. Needless to say, it's awesome.

I saw The Devil and Daniel Johnston in the theater. I loved it. I don't listen to his stuff too often anymore, but I have to give credit where credit is due. Listening to his tapes got me into so many other lo-fi/indie/experimental bands and musicians that it isn't even funny. There will always be a place in my heart for Daniel and his strange, wonderful music.
