Anybody here with a Gawker account that can leave a comment about snus?

My account got banned a while ago, lets just say I got into a tangle with some carnivores, so I can't post anything.

Good comment Rick. I shared mine too.

"One of my favorite activities on days that I'm bored is to roll around the Google machine and read over various articles that come out from time to time about snus, and read all the replies that people write, so many of which are very ill-informed and containing no information of substance, just a bunch of hearsay and comparing snus to dip. So, let's get started with some facts.

My name's Chad, and I'm a 26 year old very proud EX-SMOKER and very proud current SNUS USER. That being said, let's talk snus.

Camel "SNUS", Marlboro "snus" and Skoal "snus" are not real snus. In fact, they are as far from real snus as you can get. Real snus is made in Sweden and has a rich 200 year history that seperates it from ANY single oral tobacco product on the market today.

Now, just what is it that makes Swedish Snus SO different from American "snus"? One of the biggest is the fact that Swedish Snus is mandated as a food product (the "Swedish Food Act") by the FDA and produced via pasteurization to the point that it is virtually free of any TSNA/Carcinogen, and held to the same standards that a food product are held to. As of the date of this writing, the American FDA has imposed no production standards or mandates on American "snus", which shows that it isn't produced with the same safety or quality standards that Swedish Snus is made with. There is no standardized production method when it comes to American "snus". What's in it? Well, when it comes to Swedish Snus, it's printed RIGHT ON THE LABEL! That's reassuring, nothing to hide. They want you to know EXACTLY what you're putting in your mouth. In Camel "snus" or Marlboro "snus", we just don't know. It's not printed on the can, and they don't make it public everything that goes into their "snus".

Jonathan Foulds, MA, MAppSci, PhD, said in an article in HealthLine, "...if you want to continue to enjoy tobacco but want to use a less harmful product, then switching from cigarettes to snus makes sense - but only if accompanied by cessation of smoking." In another article in USA Today noting "The Lancet", "We should not delay in allowing snus to compete with cigarettes for market share," Dr. Jonathan Foulds of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Dr. Lynn Kozlowski of the University of Buffalo said in analyzing two studies published in The Lancet. In the same article, "For a smoker, quitting all tobacco use is best, but failing that, switching to snus is a good idea," said Dr. Peter Hajek, professor of clinical psychology at Queen Mary University Hospital in London. Hajek was not involved in either study.

60 Minutes recently aired a story, "Going Smokeless", which actually had some truth in it, amidst some of the misinformation - a lot of good information came out of it, as well. We recently did a story on it, here, along with the videos from the story as well, you can check them out if you missed it. Part of this story was Dr. Karl Fagerström who presented some very good facts about snus and harm reduction. "Many authorities....somewhere between 90-99% less harmful than smoking." "They have reduced their risk from a skyscraper to a two story building." He also said, "Addiction is regarded as unnatural state, so addiction is a problem, but it's less of a problem than lung cancer." It is stories like these that show the media can present the alternative when they can go past their personal bias and present facts along with the bias that they are required to present by their overlords. It is important, in the interest of public health, that all people - snus users and harm reduction supporters, as well as people who simply want what is best for those around us - embrace all opinions, keep an objective and open mind, and do their research to know truly what they are talking about before doing harmful and damaging work to those who need help. We must always present the facts, without personal bias, in the interest of furthering a better state of public health.

We need to face the facts. "QUIT OR DIE" doesn't work. That's been proven time and time again. Snus is a great alternative to those who just can't quit. It's important to understand the differences between snus and American "snus" knock-offs, because they just aren't the same. Snus has not been proven to cause any kind of oral cancer, and doesn't "make your breath stink" or "mess up your teeth". Interesting to note, dentists have observed snus users to have cleaner teeth than non snus users due to the way snus affects the pH balance in your mouth.

Anyways, hope this helped clear up some misconceptions about snus.

          -Chad Jones
