A 72 hour survival kit/backpack/walkie talkie device in all of your cars. In case your family is all spread out.

At home a 7 day survival backpack ready to go for each member of your family and a escape plan/destination out of the city if needed.

Your home should always have at least a 3 month supply food, some water storage/filters, alternate heating/energy source for a small room in the winter.

Guns are good idea to protect your home and backpacks if you need to head out of the city.

This is the best long term plan for anyone in America I think

CA is due for some big earthquakes and hopefully the earth can vent it's pressure elsewhere but we won't be able to avoid it forever. It will happen eventually.

The advantage in CA though is that none of the hippies are armed, so their stuff becomes mine

I was just discussing that on my lunch break, about how the hippies are screwed when disaster strikes since their crops will all be destroyed! Here in CA there is a LOT of livestock and deer walking around the hills though, in santa cruz the deer are super sensitized to humans so I wouldn't even have to hunt it, I could literally walk up to a deer and stab it in the neck and it would never see it coming. That's my plan if things go crazy is to take my 3 day bag and go chill out in the woods for a while till people calm down. There is so much wildlife walking around here and they are all sensitized to humans so they are super easy to kill, there is literally no sport in it. Livestock roam freely on the hills next to the freeway. I figure all the yuppies will be too busy looting wal mart to worry about me, I figure a family of 3 could live in the woods here for several weeks without much difficulty finding food.
