Meltdown may be occurring at nuclear plant, Japanese official says

'There is a possibility, we see the possibility of a meltdown,' an official with Japan's nuclear agency says in an interview with CNN, adding that he is basing this on radioactivity measurements near the plant Saturday night. But the Japanese ambassasdor to the U.S. tells CNN that there's no evidence of a meltdown.

When Japanese officials decided to vent radioactive steam from a severely overheated reactor vessel they knew a hydrogen explosion could occur, and it did. The decision still trumped the worst-case alternative - total nuclear meltdown... At least for the time being.

NOTE: Meltdown != Chernobyle. A meltdown in this facility would never be as bad as what happened in chernobyle, chernobyle happened because there was a runaway reaction with no real backups or safety precautions. Japanese reactors have all of those precautions and it is impossible (well, unlikely) for it to become a runaway reaction that burrows into the earth and the water table like Chernobyle.

Worst case scenario here still isn't going to be that bad. It will be like 3 mile island, which really didn't have a huge impact at the time that it occurred.

It's interesting how other towns have completely evacuated the area, leaving everything they have behind... which can apparently still be found there today, pretty bizarre. I suppose something like that would be expected from the USSR though, the situation as a whole and in how they decided to 'wait it out'. Thank god for the swedes!

The Chernobyl reactor exploded into the air which is why it was so bad. Also the design of Chernobyl would never have been accepted in the West.
This Fukushima reactor has a metal container underneath the core which all the stuff will go into upon meltdown.
The question is, will this hold.
Reactor number 3 which is the present reactor in question holds plutonium which is far more worrying than the uranium in the other.

Personally, no matter what the authorities say, I think there's going to be a disaster.

I have only vaguely watched a bit of the burning reactor...

So was there any loss of chemical substance? Why would there be a disaster?

It's still bad - the only result from 3 mile island was that Joe 6 pack started believing all of the anti-nuclear BS.

This set the industry back 30 years. I don't see any legitimate path forward that doesn't require nuclear or a severe loss of standard of living...
