I have an iPad and recently bought a Nook Color (cause it was a cheap Android tablet) and love them. I wasn't an avid reader, maybe would pick up a book at the airport to read on the plane, but since getting these devices I find myself reading about a book a week. One other effect of having these devices is that I am buying many more eBooks than I ever bought books. DRM isn't an issue with me as, like movies or TV shows, once I read a book, I am done with it and move on, I don't collect. I also love the Kindle software on my iPad. There seem to be a lot of technical books on Amazon for the Kindle so I usually buy all my technical books for the Kindle and my Fiction through iBook.

Not a bad price really. I think it would be cool to own one. But for someone like me who doesn't read as much as he'd like, real books are the way to go.
There's something about holding a dead tree and smelling it and feeling the paper that it's hard for me to get over.

Several friends and family have got Kindles over the last couple of months and they all rave about them, so I can't see you being disappointed with it.
I'm tempted, because I do read a lot, but I'm also a bit strapped for cash and all my books come from the library or on loan from friends, so if I was to get a kindle I'd have to start buying books again. This does make me sound like a skinflint, but times are tough!
From a practical point of view, I think the idea of e-readers is brilliant, especially if you travel a lot - you can save a lot of space and weight in luggage with one of these things; and for the commuters like me, you know you've only got to carry one thin gadget around with you. I always avoid taking big hardbacks out the library because of their bulk.
Pretty sure if I didn't have other priorities for my money, I'd get one like a shot.

Maybe it would be cool if you didn't have a smart phone.
I also have a massive amount of books that are pre-loaded but I did find myself in a situation the other day where I raced through the first part of a trilogy and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to read the other two right away. If I didn't have the 3G I would have had to wait until I could get to a Wifi spot.
The 3G is however responsible for a number of impulse buys - usually while commuting home and having read a great review of a book on the NYT / CS Monitor / London Review of Books - so in that sense it is a bad thing....

I also got a kindle for Christmas. I love it. The first book I downloaded was the Anarchist Cookbook.....I'm sure I'm on a list somewhere now but oh well, its a file that's been around since the 80's and I find it hilarious. Anyways.....+1 on the kindle. I can't read on a backlit screen for very long without getting a headache. I can read the kindle all day long.
