I've got a tin of McClelland Tudor Castle that I've been airing out for the past couple of months. It's very similar to Beacon, except Tudor Castle also includes some number 1 grade Yenidje. The ketchup smell is almost gone, and I'm looking forward to firing up a bowl.

Do that. I just loaded up a freehand Bjarne with Tudor Castle and am happily puffing away. The Yenidje blends perfectly with the high-grade bright and red Virginias. There was almost no sign of the Perique at first, but after about 15-20 puffs, it definitely made its presence known. The flavor is so complex and delicious, I got a little carried away and gave myself a bit of tongue bite from puffing too fast.

That is pipe tobacco. The sheet she starts off with is a pressed blend of Virginia and perique. Then she rolls it up and inserts the Cavendish center. Then it's pressed into a "log" and the log is cut into "coins". Nifty stuff. I really enjoy them

For non pipe smokers "flake" is a type of tobacco that usually must be crumbled up in some fashion to put in a pipe bowl and this is referred to as "rubbing out".

St. James Flake is by far my favorite, but, as you said, it can be hard to find. Cornell & Diehl Bayou Morning is very good, too. There's also a Bayou Morning Flake, which I haven't tried, but I hear it's made from a different recipe than the ready-rubbed. A lot of people like the McClelland Va/Pers, but I have a hard time getting past the ketchup smell that most McClelland products have.

And I have about an ounce of a St. James Virginia I bought from a local tobacconist a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, I am a bit of a dilettante when it comes to pipes; I enjoy smoking them quite a bit, but I pretty much just stick to lightly flavored Cavendish and plain burleys. I never really got into that style of Virginia. Perhaps if I let it age for a couple of years it will appeal to me. The strange thing I have found is that I absolutely love the way spicy flake tobacco blends smell, but the smoke is less appealing to me.

Somewhat reflecting the situation with snus many pipe tobaccos' tin aromas are not especially indicative of how they smoke. In some cases the difference can be extreme--many American drugstore pouch brands are guilty of this.
