    Even More Serious Indian Snuff

The Indian fellow at the convenience store around the corner is now my official snuff wallah. He wasn't able to come up with any more of the incredibly smoky and redolent Sri Ambal but he did proffer a 50g box of Sugandh Sagar Rose Snuff. After a bit of rooting around I found a review of this on Snuffhouse by our very own Tom502 who is a far more experienced snuffer than I but I'll throw in some impressions as well. This came in a round plastic can, as opposed to the metal tin Tom had, and the snuff was contained within a plastic bag inside. Not a Ziplock but a plain plastic bag twisted shut and stuffed into the can. I couldn't wait to leave the store so I sliced the label around the lid and essayed a small exploratory pinch.

Good grief this is powerfully floral stuff, in an entirely good way. I felt transported to the Maharani's garden where vast bouquets of roses, hisbiscus, etc. etc. are arrayed to keep the stench and squalor of the city outside at bay. Aggressive yet subtle and complex. Seems too good for mere humble servants of the Raj. This dry ochre floral is as inviting as Kendal Brown is off-putting. Magical, and persistent. I'm still aware of the fragrance a half hour later. And my god the nic. Lifted me right off my feet and spun me around. Most powerful hit I've had yet, a shivery head-spinning delight. My snuff wallah wanted to give me two cans of this but I refused and payed him a fiver for just one. Costlier than what Tom reported but geez this can should last me six months at least. I can hardly wait to see what "my" wallah will turn up next.

Tom was kind enough to buy some Indian snuffs he found locally and ship them to me. This was one of them. Honestly, I don't use a lot of snuff right now and the ones he sent me aren't really my cup of tea right now. Maybe they will grow on me over time. I remember them being very strong in nicotine and especially in flavor (like you'll be smelling it all day). I'm gonna go try that rose one right now just for fun...

...WOW! It's really fine and I almost inhaled it. It's very strong in nic. The flavor reminds me of incense. I think it may have mellowed a bit. It's a bit heavy on the perfume for my taste, but it's worth a try if you can find it.

The aroma stays with you for quite a while it's true but it's so different, and the nic hit so impressive, that I don't feel too much allowance needs to be made for the fragrance. Everyone's different in that regard of course. A lot different so rhapsodizing about a flavor/aroma that bowls me over won't mean a thing to the next guy. The snuff in question is indeed very fine, almost scotch-like, but bitty pinches and a reasonable amount of care taken is always a good idea with an unfamiliar product and that approach worked well here. The suggestion of incense in the aroma is fairly well on target.

I agree, the three he sent me are very different from any other snuffs I've tried. I'm not knocking them. Variety is one of my favorite things about snuff. It's like and endless journey.

Can you find this stuff in a tobacco store pretty easily?

I think he got them from like an Indian grocery type store. Just depends where you are probably.

Since Tom and I live in the same city, I'd be very interested to know where this Indian grocery is, and whether they still carry snuff. Care to add your $.02, Tom? Please?

There's pretty much not a chance in hell you'll find this sort of thing in a regular tobacco store. My source is the Indian proprietor of a local stop & rob with whom I've discussed things snussy and snuffy quite a bit. If I remember correctly Tom found his at an Indian restaurant. Availability is going to be randomly fluky unless Mr. Snuff decides to lay some in stock.

Mr. Snuff does have 5 Photo Super Himalaya in stock, as well as some of the Dholakia brands. The latest newsletter says he's waiting on a shipment, and the Indian manufacturers usually take a while to deliver.

Patel's Grocery, on Hurstbourne Ln, a few spots next to Shalamar Indian restaurant. They had the Rose, Himalaya, and Madras. Also some Indian spit tobacco. Their Himalaya is kinda old in tins, one I got was rusted, so I bought new ones for myself from Nicotine Rush. But their snuffs are very cheap at that store.

Thanks. I haven't been out to that part of town in quite a while, but I may just have to make a special trip.

It's way on the other side of town for me, and I haven't been out there in a while. I have been craving some Indian food though. And I want some Bidis, which I didn't see there last time I was there, but I had bought some there before.

                              Hey Guys:

Couldn't help but notice my name

What is the snuff you are referring to up top? Is there a manufacturers website? Sun is on its way now finally. Still waiting for a response on the 5 photo. Gone real quiet, but I am not too worried (yet).

                              Thanks,
                              Dave
