Nasal snuff

Can you use nasal snuff like snus(toque,wilsons). Just wondering. And is it as bad for your health as dip or chew or is it pretty much the same as snus

You mean like loose snus? I would not use specifically made nasal snuffs, like Toque, but while the snuff is not made the same as Swedish snus is, I think you could get some American Scotch snuff, pour it in a bowl, and add some water to get the consistency one wants, and then make pris out of it. The flavor would be not as good, maybe some flavor enhencing elements could be added. I bottom-lip dipped a few American Scotch snuffs, and they really arn't bad, I actually liked it more than standard dip. Once I added some water to it and molded a pris, it did hold up, but upper-lipped, it seemed rather bland, I only did this one time.

Depends on what type of snuff it is. European snuffs like Toque, Poschl, Wilsons, etc are specifically made to be sniffed. I would not reccomend putting them in your mouth, it would taste horrible and probably not do much in the nic hit department.

American scotch and sweet snuff, such as Navy, Rooster, WE Garret, Red Seal etc can be either snuffed or dipped in the mouth. They were originally made to be sniffed, but along the way people started using them orally. Some of the sweets are very sweet, like Honeybee.

A small warning, American snuffs are VERY fine, sniffing is difficult and the first time you try you will probably go too far and hit the back of your throat. Not pleasant, I know from experience. But with practice they can be quite enjoyable.

If you use them orally, they are not as safe as snus, and can cause the same damage as American dips. Also, they get very muddy and are hard to remove once you are done. I tried them orally and did not care for it at all. If you want to try, pour a bit into the lid, and then dump the lid into your bottom lip. And have a spitter handy.

I read on another forum that people used to take sweet scotch snuff and mix it in a glass with water until it had a thick muddy consistency. They would then take a stick (I think it was Hickory,) and chew the end until it became frayed and brush like. They would then use this stick to brush the mixture on their gums. I think they would also chew on the stick after to ensure they got all the nicotine goodness out of it! No doubt a similar effect could be gotten with a toothbrush.

This is the standard, Southern way of using snuff. Where the term "dipping" came from. Only see real old people doing it that way any more. But every person I have ever met here's grandmother used snuff that way.

Here in the South it is a bit more straight forward. Take a hickory stick (minus the bark) dip it into the snuff. Chew the stick. Repeat.

I've heard that around a lot, and I'd love to read the story behind it. I can't think of a more inconvenient way to use snuff :^D

Not my grandmother, per se, but there was on old lady that used to babysit my sister and I when I was 8 or 10 years old that dipped her snuff.

I sometimes wonder if it's an urban legend. It always seems to be mentioned in very general terms, including me. :wink:

My 92 year old great-grandmother used to dip her Levi Garrett snuff with her "toothbrush" and spit in her "spitcup".

I remember as a little girl watching her suck on her toothbrush to get it wet, then dipping it down into her little tin of snuff...and rolling it around in there until she had a good sized "ball" on her brush- then I'd watch her carefully lift it up and into her jaw, where she would let it sit. You would see her doing all of her "chores" with the brush stick hanging out of her mouth like a sucker stick! LOL!

dipping snuff was where it all started. I have dipped a swedishmatch brand of of nasal snuff called taxi, that is ok, it smells and tastes a bit like ettan.


But of course the best snuff for dipping was designed for that purpose, my 2 favourite brands of snuff for oral use are 2 of the oldest brands in the world, Ettan for upper decking and Copenhagen Snuff for lower decking.

How the hell does someone 'dip' american nasal snuff? It's so fine and powdery and would just turn in to a turd of disgusting mud the second it hits your saliva..

American Scotch Snuff, I would not specifically call "nasal snuff", it's all purpose powdered tobacco, and it's been dipped since the 18th century. It is kind of a challenge getting it in the mouth, but it forms easily when done, and it isn't too bad. I am not a dipper, but have tried a variety, and I liked the scotch snuff more than the fine/long cut dips.

Bruton Scotch Snuff was the predecessor dip that led to Copenhagen.
