how long does scotch snuff stay good for?

i love me sum european snuff, but nothing packs that vitamin n punch, quite like good ole american scotch. long story short, ive started a scotch snuff collection, but have not been able 2 find honest snuff, and sweet cherry,despite scowering nearly every tobbaco shop in my county. until yesterday, when i found a huge jar of assorted scotch snuff in an antique store,and in this jar they had my cherry and my honest(along with several others ive never heard of) i have no idea how old they are,though both of them have never been opened and the cans are in perfect condition, they also have barcodes(doesnt that mean they are atleast post 1970?) so, my fellow snuffers,are they safe 2 use? would U use them?

i would go for it as its a unopened jar, as a bench mark if it looks ok go for it as open air is the killer of snuffs as for high nic try toque quit or f&t high dry toast for that nic fix

I would guess indefinitely. Paperboard tins can absorb moisture, and cause the snuff to cake, but if you shake it, and hear powder moving around, it should be good.

The flavor will mellow a bit.....but I've had snuff from the 30's that was still good

if the tins are........well.......tin.....the only problem is oxidation.....so check for rust....otherwise they will be fine

but note.....if they are old they will not be a fair representation of fresh(er) snuff..... flavor wise.......they will give you an idea........but fresh will be like hearing the symphony live

thanks 4 the advice. yah the honest snuff is metal but there is no rust watsoever, and the texture and smell of both seem no different then the brand new bruton i just got(great stuff btw) also, i did some research and apparently one fellow bought a can of snuff off ebay that was over a hundred years old and unopened, and he did it and said it was great......also another question......with the exception of honey bee, all these american scotches basiclly taste/smell the same. even the cherry only has a very faint cherry aroma, are there any scotch's that taste tottaly different? here is my collection. navy

Tops Mild (not sweet) is a nice variation on a theme and the most complex (layered) of the several Americans I have had so far

Rooster is also like an amped up Burtons/Square

If you like the Americans give Wilson Toast #22, Fribourg and Treyer HDT (High Dry Toast), and Toque Natural Toast a try.

I would say 5 years would be my limit, just for taste, but if stored dry, that stuff will be snuffable for a long long time.

Remember these scotches are used primarily in the south as dipping (oral) snuffs. The taste in the lip is what I believe they were flavored for. Hence the sweets. Try a little lip of each for an education in what they can deliver, if your brave.
